Handrail Fitting for Companionway Beneteau 411 2003

Help Please. The stainless steel fitting holding the wooden handrail on the companionway has a broken screw so is very unsafe. We cannot figure out how to get this fitting off the rail, or to remove the rail altogether so that we can have the fitting repaired. Any knowledge out there?

Will include a photo when we can next get on line.

Yes a photo or two would be most helpful. I'm not clear if it is a fitting a screw or what. With the photos, you will probably get more help than you can handle.

Look forward to the pix,

Rich

Thanks to those who have posted on this thread.

I am wondering how on earth to upload a photo which I have prepared when one has to supply a URL for the photo? Very confusing.... I have loaded two photos under the Add Video, but not sure if that will work.

The fitting has a broken screw stuck in the hole. Also we cannot get the fitting to slide off the rail as there appears to be a screw holding it. We have tried inserting a screwdriver in the hole on the 'shank' and turning it but it seems to be stuck in place.

Any ideas on how this fitting works and can be dismantled?

It's late and I'm tired. But a few seconds looking an EZOut looks like it may do the trick. But besides being tired my eyes are burning from allergies. Will look at it fresh tomorrow

Good night all, I hate pollen

I see you're problem. How is the handrail retained in the steel brackets? Is there perhaps a set screw? If so you could loosen those screws and slide the handrail out. For the broken screw I go get an EZ-Out from the local hardware store and follow the directions.

For the broken hardware can you see if remnants of the screw are screwed in or an integral piece of the hardware ? If they are integral with bracket, there must be a way to slide the rail out.

Let me know what you find. Some closeup pix from a variety of angels of one of the fittings might help.

Think you have to get all the screws holding the rail first out and then remove the rail. Then the fittings can be screwed of. In your case the broken one needs a new screw attached some way thou it's a quess work how as long as it's still in place..

I guessing there might be a set screw as well. Look underneath for a small hex head screw which locks the handle onto the main screws. Remove them the the handle comes off, allowing you to get at the broken screw. For this, Drill a hole in it and use an EZout.

Needle nose vice grips might work to get the screw out of the wood.

Just a thought but you might want to contact Benetau send them the pic and let them tell you how to disassemble the rascal. You are going to probably have them supply a new fitting.

Re: Handrail Fitting for Companionway Beneteau 411 2003

Thanks so much to all who contributed suggestions for this dodgy handrail fitting. Here is how we solved it.
1. We found another Beneteau owner and worked out the solution was to stick a tiny screwdriver or drill bit into the hold on the shank. Then use this as a lever to make the shank turn. That unscrewed from the round piece going around the rail. The shanks on the friend's boat were a bit easier to undo than ours and it helped us to establish which direction we should unscrew in. Once unscrewed, the fitting slid off the handrail. We took the whole handrail off ie unscrewed the other two fittings as well.
2. We used a jig saw with a very small narrow fitting to cut a groove into the top of the broken screw stuck in the hole, then removed it with a screwdriver.
3. We took the broken screw and the fitting to the nearest welding shop and had them welded back together.
4. Re-installed the handrail - good as new. No need to buy a new fitting.
