Grease blockage in the Galley Sink (how to prevent)

might wanna change out your hoses if there is a build up of grease in hoses. or remove clean and replace.
once the hose is out, you can put anything you wish through that hose to clear it.
grease should not be sent down there.
use grease for cooking or fishing. if i have lots of grease i put into a container for disposal at a later date

I have noticed this to be a bigger problem in the colder waters of New England than the warmer waters south.

I'm with the small plunger crew. Hot water and plunge, baby, plunge.

Reminds me of a funny story.

once we were in Florida and while washing dishes I kept noticing the sink gurgling and draining fast. I thought hey the problem is solved!

but, when I went on deck I saw several Manatees next to the boat. They were sucking the fresh water out of the drain!

It did clear the drain for a while.

Better then a plunger! just find you a Manatee!

A few years ago I was snorkeling at the edge of the reef from Caye Caulker, Belize... spotted a lone manatee gracefully swimming along... pretty close too!

Your story now has me wondering how wide a berth I should allow them during future encounters?

Not that I spout fresh water from anywhere on my body... BUT THEY DON'T KNOW THAT!

OK NOW that's funny! The thought never crossed my mind until NOW! BURR!

I have an engine intake strainer plumbed in below the sink as a filter. It was done because the bottom of the sink is below the waterline but it certainly stops any derbies including grease getting into the drain line. I used an intake stainer because they are big and easy to clean, just take the basket out and rinse overboard. Normal in-line strainers are never big enough and usually more difficult to get at the strainer element.

That's an interesting idea! On land, because I have a little bit of real estate around me... I can toss mine overboard, down the hill. Nice to have some ideas for the boat as well!

Bset. Bet is to damp wipe dishes and pans with detergent infused disposable (paper towels newspapers, packaging )towels and let greas get into the drain . Works for me! If you're offshore presoak greasy stuff in a bucket of soapy sea water and dump it overboard.

Sea monkeys especially the males. Look at the pictures they all have little Potbellys because they love Grease. You can order them in the back of any comic book.





























Okay okay. Put about a half a cup of baking soda down the drain and one cup of vinegar, heated will make it more active. It will Bubble Up and spread it in your sink, just wipe it up . Use more for tougher jobs.

As a plumber, I always used active enzymes. When customers had grease issues, mostly commercial kitchens, you put some down the drain, they activate in warm water. They attach to the grease and organic material and consume and break it down. They stay active for about a month.

I agree with those saying wipe the plates before chucking them in the sink.

I use toilet paper. It's cheaper and less waste than paper towels.

it takes a LOT of grease to clog a 1.5 inch hose.
i am impressed.
please get a cardiac workup.
i feed the grease to the fishies either directly via bbq or off the plate before washing dishes. as i live in tropics i wash dishes on my back deck. no clogs.(except on feet!! ha ha ha )
soap and hot water added to pan to create a white slippery gooey mess does not stay as a liquid for much time once it hits water cooler than the temp of the grease.
i think we not be sailing in volcanoes. yet.
i learned to avoid grease down sink in my childhood.

never again. as soon as we got dispozall unit,whenever they were first placed for public sale, momma clogged drain by scraping greasy plates down sink. oops. was a pita.
remember other stuff gets caught in the grease and makes the clog harder to bust up.
neighbors did this all the time. was almost humorous. we wondered if the folks had a relative in plumbing business or if she was having an affair....
yes the plumbing issues are same -- but you say not related to boating--guess what--pouring grease down a hole which passes into colder area than grease always makes a clog. what you learned about this in your own home on land applies here.
