50 First Dates? .....it might be worth adding. I think it is a good movie....not as much 'boat' in it that one might want though.

+1
Yeah, not as much boat as one might like, but the story line of fixing up the boat and going off plays well in this arena

Zeehag ought to love it just for the boat

I forget the name, but it was a pycho-thriller with John Travolta where he hand built gorgeous sailing wooden yachts and there were a few short scenes with him sailing one and a few in his workshop.. I also enjoy Open Water 2 where I get to see one of my favorite 75 foot yachts from K&M.. Gorgeous Neo Classic!!

Re: good boat movies?

There are good UK productions of the Arthur Ransome books "Swallows and Amazons," "Coot Club" and "The Big Six." But they're region 2, which won't play in US DVD players. There is software to strip that out, but it takes an extra step or two before you can enjoy the movies.

I've had S&A for a while -- not as good as the book, but still fun to watch. Just ordered the other two from the UK.

Hide Away (2011 Movie, Original Title: A Year in Mooring)

I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned this one. It is available on Netflix instant play.

Love the scene where the sailboats pull out from the dock, all decked out in lights for Christmas, with a marvelous, throaty rendition of Silent Night in the background. Worth the entire movie just for the few seconds of that!

IMDB Description: A successful businessman attempting to resurrect his life buys and boards a dilapidated sailboat.

Warning: This is not an action packed movie--more meditative and moody which I like but YMMV

(and, hello to all--I'm new here and loving all the interesting posts)

Re: good boat movies?

Recently watched the 2011 "Treasure Island" mentioned earlier in the thread streaming on Netflix. It was great! In two one and a half hour parts. Eddie Izzard was awesome as Long John Silver, everyone else was good too. Even got Elijah Wood as an unconventional Ben Gunn and Donald Sutherland playing a great Captain Flint, even though I think he's a bit long in the tooth for the role. Totally worth watching. Haven't figured out which tall ship they used yet, but I'm guessing HMS Pickle? Good stuff.

Re: good boat movies?

OK, here's my list:

The short film, The Crimson Permanent Assurance, which was shown as the beginning of Monty Python and the Meaning of Life.

Yellowbeard (1983)-- awesome cast of 80's comedians.

The original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney movie starring Kirk Douglas (1954)

And, +1 for Captain Ron. Flipping hilarious! Here in Annapolis, our motley crew of sailing buddies is planning a "Captain Ron" movie night over in the marina lounge. We all love that movie, even my son. And since our boat's a "fixer-upper," my son makes analogies to it all the time (for better or for worse).

Cheers,
S/V Octopussy

Re: good boat movies?

The endurance and "hideaway" Hideaway is kinda different in that it deals with a man that lost his wife and child and buys a project boat on the Great Lakes. Pretty cool flick.
