My advice, become less close-minded, quickly, if you wish to survive. Some SHTF scenarios are not so far-fetched that their probability of occurrence is insignificant.

The 2007-9 recession was entirely predictable. Some of us made a great deal of money. Some of us were barely impacted. Some of us lost everything. I know which group I want to be in. Do you?
Only predictable to those that took the time to look, it's hard for most to even question the herds narrative let alone take contrarian action even in the face of ample data.

How many preppers do you actually know?

I remember reading an article, probably thirty years ago. The author had bought into Mel Tappan's advice on guns - that you needed to have:
  • A .308 battle rifle
  • A .223 assault rifle
  • A .45 combat pistol
  • A .38 revolver
  • A 12ga pump shotgun

for each adult and responsible child, plus two more sets for guests.

He'd been lax - he had only one set for guests, and was considering the purchase of second, when he realized that for the same price he could buy enough food to feed everyone who lived within ten miles for a year.

And he wrote the article to that point - that being willing and able to help your neighbors is likely to do more to ensure your survival than having another bunch of guns.

In the years since, there has been a general realization among the prepper community that the rugged, well-armed individual in his bunker is far less likely to survive than a well-regarded member of a small, well-knit community.

In other words, this isn't a new realization among the prepper community. It's something they've understood for decades.

you really are behind the times there . The modern prepper is part of a larger close knit community . We all help each other to prepare for what ever issue may come along to test out fortitude.

As to weapons and ammo well a good .223 hunting rifle or a .308 will be plenty also being proficient with a bow is a good thing.

As to weapons for combat type situations well if those are actually needed there will be plenty just laying around.

The "big collapse" already happened in 2008, meh ....it was short lived.

It never finished if you understand what's been propping the longest US expansion on record up......its merely been kicked down the road a little further by unconventional and sustainable policies.

The big collapse that preppers worry about is a disruption of food transportation.

Most cities have three day's food on hand.

If something happens to stop the trucks, there are going to be a lot of hungry people.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Amish or Mennonite communities, who pretty much live a pre-industrial lifestyle today, and could easily adapt to a total pre-industrial way of life.
Apart from the strong emphasis on 'fake news' (The Bible), they are close knit, co-operative societies that are reasonably if not completely self-sufficient in food.

I've mostly lived in small communities and there's something we call "Stephan King" syndrome. People from cities seem very nervous sometimes like we're all secretly zombies or possessed.

Perhaps "unconventional and unsustainable policies"

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

Right now I thinking a marina is a good place to go - it seems everyone is planning to sail away so there should be plenty of space and not many takers - many dock prices will plummet??

“Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever, in a finite world, is either a madman, or an economist”. ~ Kenneth Boulding (remark to the US Congress in 1973)

FWIW: In the 1960s, roughly 33 per cent of the population lived in a city; now it's 54 per cent. The UN projects that by 2050, that number will climb to 68 per cent*.
