Sure… but to be realistic here, there are skillful people everywhere. It’s unlikely that a functioning community will be severely lacking in the skills a cruiser typically has.

Not saying a good skillset isn’t useful. It definitely is. But a more important skill is building actual connections with a community of actual people. And this takes time.

I agree that we need to work together, but alas, it is unrealistic to assume that we can prevent the SHTF in many cases. There are many problems that just can not be prevented.

Just a few include tsunami, super volcano, extreme and extended weather event (N.B. I am not talking about global warming. I am talking about extended blizzard, large and slow moving tropical cyclone, severe drought, etc.), severe financial collapse/disruption, epidemic/pandemic, conflict, and I am sure that we can think of more.

The correct answer is not trying to prevent the unpreventable but rather being prepared to the extent one can be prepared.

I agree - great spot and I would stay here (or near) as long as I can stay out of the zone near Indian Island and then upwind of it later. Just in case things get uglier

Entropy guys. Entropy. It would bite us in the butt even if our boats are bug-out ready right now. My amel pretty much is.... always full diesel tank and jerries (I keep the tank full and rotate another hundred liters in jerries), always full jerries of petrol, new gear, spare gear, 3 year old rigging and sails, solar and wind gennies, watermaker and spare membranes for it, bilges bursting with a year's worth of canned and dried food, fishing tackle, dive gear.... whatever, we'd be good. For a while. On land, it would be a different story to dig in and go back to basics over the long term. On a boat, tho, it can only be used to get you to a place where you can do that, which would be few and far between for reasons others have said.

In five or ten years, where am I gonna get new rigging? Can any of us really make a proper sail from absolute scratch? Or a new watermaker membrane? I can build a little cabin, restore a house, build a fire and find water, but I can't machine a new prop or carve a triple block for my mainsail when entropy (and UV) shatter it. Our boats are too modern to be more than vehicles to get us somewhere over the short term. From there, I don't think sailing would be in my future....altho a polynesian raft might be doable

Interesting thread. Seeing things are wide open here, my thoughts. First, I have lived thru a number of coup d'états in West Africa in the past 30 years. What I learned over the years made me respected in recent coups. It is very important to be part of a team. Even one that comes together because of the event. I have an ocean going sailboat however as someone pointed out, difficult to leave the Great Lakes due to locks. Remember Governments will not be our friend during an event. All they will want to do is control us. Also a thing called ice part of the year makes fleeing difficult by boat. SO the reality is I would stay put. I have water supply ( Great Lake) 100 meters from my abode. I have lots of trees and a stock of firewood for heat and cooking. I do not live in a city. I am an avid gardener and have a small green house. I have guns/ammo and know how to use them. I keep a stock of silver coins for barter. The most likely event we could face in most of North America if SHTF is the loss of electricity. We have had a few experiences already over the years. So what would happen, there would be no instant tellers to dispense cash, nor fuel for cars. SO the city folk would be stuck in the city, unless they walk out. I have a good friend in the trucking business. He says that food would not last 48 hours due to just in time delivery today. Truckers would not be able to get fuel or cash either. We have all seen the store scenarios on CNN prior to hurricanes. Those people do not have the knowledge or ability to use firearms, to grow things or to simply exist without electricity. As I said, I think the most likely SHTF event for North America is the loss of electricity, either due to war, asteroid, or our own stupidity. There are a lot of books out there that have TSHF scenario as a theme. Agenda 21 comes to mind.
So my solution is to stay in place and keep family and friends close. Survive, fight if I have to, die if I have to. I am not a "prepper" although certain preparation and skills will be valued when TSHF. Common sense is also very valuable.
