Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

Without Law and Order, armed gangs will prevail.
They will kill anyone who is not one of them, and steal their goods.
The only solution is to join one of these armed gangs and earn their trust.
We will very quickly return to a violent, tribal society.
It will not be pretty.

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

Sorry but this is all old hat. It's all been done before, but for real. There was this millionaire in the 30's who foresaw World War 2 & wanted a secure safe haven for his family. He could go anywhere, do anything to escape the coming cataclysm. He researched all the options very thoroughly, & finally moved his family to set up home somewhere nice & remote that would be untouched by conflict. He chose Guadalcanal.....

Not wise decision.. Accordance to WIKI..
"The Guadalcanal campaign, also known as the Battle of Guadalcanal and codenamed Operation Watchtower by American forces, was a military campaign fought between 7 August 1942 and 9 February 1943 on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater of World War II"

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

Of course the best location or strategy will depend on which shyte is hitting the fan. A major armed conflict will be different than an environmental disaster as will a financial meltdown.

… Although, come to think of it, likely ALL of these things will come to pass at the same time.

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

I would be staying right here ..North Carolina. We have some of the best fishing on the coast, and still plenty of wooded areas to hunt for food. Such a long growing season, sail off the ocean way and down on of the long rivers and find great fertile land to grow crops. Such a shot winter on the Crystal Coast and further down near Pleasure Island. This is where we first colonized and there is a reason Oriental is a sailor's haven. May not be exotic but it would be just another great adventure.

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

The simple answer, as Mike OReilly and others have already pointed out, is location depends on the scenario. That said, one thing is clear; your odds of survival (success) will increase with advanced preparation. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Note 'prepare'; mere planning is not enough.

SHTF scenarios range from a 1929-scale financial implosion, to nukes, to meteor strikes, to plague, to need I go on. Global warming (aka climate change) is NOT an issue. If it exists, it occurs over time. Given time, humans adapt remarkably well. It's the near-instant events that are most problematic. To survive, you need to leave port yesterday.

The real issue is less about actual location than the resources and skills/abilities needed to get there, and to survive there. One thing is certain, strangers will not be treated kindly.

Given today's technology dependent society, in cities and towns, under some major SHTF scenarios, stores will be stripped within a day or two. No cash is accepted. No credit cards. Expect violence equal to a war zone.

In such scenarios, everyone wants to get out of Dodge. Your sailboat suddenly becomes very valuable. Will you shoot to protect it?

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

I vote for small communities/islands that belong to (protected by) a stable government.
These are largely self sufficient for food and if we have things to trade or money, we could be welcomed unless in too great of numbers. Having skills that they don't have makes you even more welcome (electronics, mechanical, GRP, etc) As fuel and parts could become scarce a stockpile of such would be needed. Venezuela is an example of a good place not to be.

About now, this might be worth reading: https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...er-handy-guide

Now, how to reach that deserted Pacific Island paradise?

Re: Global catastrophe / SHTF "survivable locations"

So, imagine the SHTF and the global economy collapses. Trade stalls due to lack of trust. Food supplies in cities disappear. Chaos in the developed world.

A country boy can survive. Skin a deer, run trot line. A country boy can survive. I can see you coming a long way off.
