Stick to QLD, really only two bars and both can be avoided.

We left North Wales in 2003 and have been pretty much 'on the hook' ever since. For extended stays there are some areas which'll prove challenging, of those which we've been through NW France, Atlantic Portugal and mainland Italy spring immediately to mind, though short-term in settled weather, we found a few spots to anchor-up even there.

The Mediterranean can be very unpleasant in the winter and is probably a whole lot colder than you're perhaps expecting (Algarve & Southern Turkey are probably best on the Med's north coast). The Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas have their Hurricane Season, but the southernmost islands aren't too bad, or run west to the ABCs or north to the east coast of the USA - up around Maine and Nova Scotia the scenery's much like you're used to though in our opinion the Western Isles have a slight edge and the water in Maine's freezing cold too.

Maybe it would be better to compile a list of places where you can't live on the hook- sounds like it would be shorter. Which is a good thing.

One of the things that prompted the question was that as I muse on our eventual journey south, once we leave Scotland the options appear to get thin on the ground- down through the Irish Sea and really as far as the Rias, there aren't many promising looking spots.
We've probably been spoiled by our local cruising area...

There are only six weather conditions: too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too windy, no wind.


My own comfort zone is 75 to 85 F, 20% humidity and 10-15 knot of breeze. Sadly, I live in South Florida.

There is no better place than the entire Caribbean basin with US, English, French, Spanish and Dutch islands to enjoy. Just choose the hurricane safe islands during the hurricane season.

If you're looking for something a little closer to home, there looks to be a great number of interesting anchorages around Northwest Spain just north of the Portugal border.

There’s a reason why they are not “ bank busters “ , that’s because they are no good for decent live aboard , ask “ kittywake “ , about to sell the only one worth considering as it is too small for comfort , remember , comfort is an important issue for most people .

Have a good look throo vid channels from “ kitty wake , Bora bora , knot vikings and recently “ paradise sailings “ (?) and others , many many free safe places along n w France down to Spain / Portugal , and scilly isles before that . Kitty wake are selling their heavenly twins because it is too small , asking price 15£k , but I expect you would have same issues with this ( very capable ) boat as they have . As you said , a decent cat is expensive , but they are around occasionally . ( maybe I got the only one !!! )

No matter where I go people say they live in the best place on earth. There are exceptions but generally true.
Second PNW from the San Juan Islands to Alaska. Lots of free great food. If you are from Scotland you can deal with the weather although the BVI was nice.

They aren't a decent live aboard?

We must have done something wrong being very comfortable on a 34' cat, then buying another 34' cat. If we buy again it will be similar size.

No idea who kitty wake is.

As far as budget goes, a Wharram might be another option to look at if you want to get some of the catamaran benefits.

They can also be easier on the budget going forward too (unless you buy one that is a wreck in the first place) since maintenance is simplified in many ways.
