Favorite places in the Bahamas?

Hey everyone! Just about to light out from Florida and curious about your favorite town, anchorage, or beach in the Bahamas, what makes it special? I am usually on the move when passing through and have a bit more time to explore on a 3'6'' draft Cat! Please feel free to share your stories!

Re: Favorite places in the Bahamas?

Gotta be the Exumas! Man oh man, did we enjoy our time there and I cannot wait to get back. Well protected anchorages, awesome beaches, so many seemingly deserted islands - if I was going to set up base somewhere, it'd be there

One place I remember with special fondness is Cambridge Cay in the Exumas -- not much to do there but hike along the high clifftops. Amazing views, including white-tailed tropicbirds -- and a good way to stretch the legs and get your heart pumping after the close confines of the boat.

All of them if you can get past Chicken Harbor. Down across and back up. WOW

While I tend to favor a location like this I know friends who would be stir crazy in places like this and would rather be in a place like Georgetown at Volleyball Beach or Hamburger Beach with crowds and plenty of bars to drink away the night.

There are hundreds of islands in the Bahamas offering a wide array of activities. Few folks have been to all of the. That being said one place I would really like to visit that I have never seen is The Cow and The Bull.

Re: Favorite places in the Bahamas?

Cambridge Cay (or Little Bell Cay) offers some decent diving sites, best explored at slack tide.

Re: Favorite places in the Bahamas?

There is a long list, but a few of my tops would be :
  • Waderick Wells if you have not been - great sea life
  • Spanish Wells - just a great little town
  • Little Farmers - just a neat spot and interesting locals
Have a great trip!

Conception Island; by good fortune rather than planning, this was our very first landfall in the islands and we've not bettered it yet.

Little Harbor on Great Abaco is a beautiful and well protected harbor. I have not been there in several years, but, it used to be home to a famous artist. a Mr. Johnson who did many well known sculpts throughout the world. His son Pete was also in the business and had a little bar called Pete's Pub. Veryneat!!

Wow, where to start?

Abacos: Green Turtle Cay - many good marinas, restaurants and anchorages, nice town, great beaches, rent a golf cart. Marsh Harbour - great supply port, lots to do, many restaurants and activities, good protection, large anchorage; Hopetown/Elbow Cay - Very scenic town, harbor and lighthouse. Good beach, some shopping, lots of bicycling and dinghy opportunities, rent a golf cart and see the island.

Exumas: Shroud Cay - Some very interesting dinghy and hiking opportunities via the back creeks, best done at half tide or better; Warderick Wells - Get a mooring in the "slot", Exuma park headquarters, very scenic, great hiking and snorkeling; Compass Cay - small friendly marina, great hiking and beach, swim with Tucker's sharks; Staniel Cay - center of cruising life in the mid-Exumas, lots of activities, see the famous swimming pigs next door at Big Majors Cay, swim and dive into Thunderball Cave/Grotto, rent a golf cart and see the island.

Eleuthera: Spanish Wells - Interesting town, good supplies and shipyards. Starting point for the Devils Backbone, Preachers Cave and Harbour Island. Hire a pilot from Spanish Wells for your first trip over the Backbone; Harbour Island - one of the nicest towns in the Bahamas, world famous pink sand beach, good restaurants, rent a golf cart; Glass Window Bridge - very scenic, popular spot; Rock Sound - southernmost town in Eleuthera, rent a car and see the rest of the island, many attractions.

Re: Favorite places in the Bahamas?

Mayaguana Island and Abrahams Bay if you go that far east, excellent diving in a protected bay. I could spend weeks there.

We're headed up there in a few weeks to clear in, and were planning to do some diving and fishing. It's only 50 miles north of us. Any pointers on the best places to spear a dinner for two?
