Favorite part of life on board

Hello everyone,
New to the forum. My wife and I are moving onto a 40’ silverton next week and can’t wait. I’ve heard and read about a lot of downsides of living aboard… wanted to hear some of everyone’s favorite upsides or best parts that you enjoy about life on the water.

We are in Boston harbor if anyone ever wants to meet up.

Cheers

The whole world is our back yard! And mostly the people you meet are interesting and friendly.

Life onboard is great place to be creative, to learning and to have a little adventure. It's a place to be (relatively) free, and a way to cease contributing to so many of the world's problems.

Creativity, Learning, Adventure, Freedom & Cessation

I've only lived aboard in a marina - three different ones - one of my best boat-neighbors was a Silverton convertible, about 37 feet as I recall (they didn't liveaboaed but used their boat a lot). Really depends on the marina, but with a decent harbor master, nice community of neighborly types is the upside. I also had a pair of mallard ducks that I fed off the stern of my boat for a couple years (Fred & Ethel), so closeness to nature is an upside. Easy to work on the boat is another benefit. I was also a delivery captain during that time so living aboard just fit. It's not for everyone, but I sure liked it. I'm sorry I bought a house (recently sold - headed back to water but cruising this time)

Nothing beats the first sip of coffee in the cockpit watching the sunrise. If you are still for a few moments, something one rarely is living on land, you will hear the sea lion exhale and see it poke it’s head up and greet you. You will see sunlight flash on shoals of small fish right next to your boat. You will know peace.

And you will share the peacefulness with other boaters or share the anxiety about weather with people who actually understand. You will get a helping hand or offer one in the way neighbors do. You will hear and feel and smell the small things that change because you are alive. You will know you can untie the dock lines and go or stay securely tied up in your slip by your own choice. You will feel the heaving breath of the universe and you will be part of it.

The challenge of adventure, new places and sights, the sea life and interacting with it.

A clear, late summer night with good breeze. Boat is powered up, not enough to have a reef in...the sound of the breeze and water, the flag off the back whipping in the wind. A good moon lighting up the water...

It reminds me of overnight races I sailed as a teenager.

Sounds like it’s time to throw the problem overboard.

Then you can trash the bracket.

Re: Favorite part of life on board

My wife and I lived on a Silverton 38 sport bridge in Constitution Marina then Charlestown Marina! I can say you’re certainly on the right path!!

The Silverton was very liveable which is about to become very important for you. Living aboard in winter up there is an experience.

We didn’t do the winter enclosure for the two winters we spent up there, but in hindsight, it’s worth doing. Get yourself a few good space heaters as well- at some point, your central heaters will be unable to pull any heat from the water you’re in and it WILL get cold.

Winterize your upstairs plumbing or it WILL burst.

Do what you can to break up the ice that forms around you, it WILL gouge your gelcoat and bootstripe.

Notice that all my advice is about winter mitigation... that’s because the rest of the year is great! I guess the only other weird thing I’d say to watch is the tides, but most marinas have floating docks so you’re good.

Enjoy!!!

Beautiful sunsets. Snorkeling or swimming during the day. Rafting up with good folks during the day and sharing meals at night. Repeat.
