I was wandering what the best all around book would be for understanding the water and sailboats in general. Basically what book would you recommend for a new liveaboard sailor.

I found in Nigel Calder's "Cruising Handbook: A Compendium for Coastal and Offshore Sailors" a valuable resource.

Dashew's "Circumnavigator's Handbook" has a lot of good advice in it. You don't have to agree with everything, but they take reasoned positions and discuss a variety of options.

Stress Free Sailing by Duncan Wells. The kindle version even has video! Other books will teach you sailing. This book will teach you how to look like a pro around the docks. Our all-time favorite.

Ahoy Grayson:
All the books mentioned probably are fine "all round" advice books.
My suggestion is to find / buy a book that explains WEATHER.


Knowing what will happen / might happen / could happen will make your sailing much less terrifying.

The Dashews wrote several books. They are now freely downloadable from their website. I highly recommend it. I think I managed to snag one of the last copies of the actual book set, they may now be out of print.
