Does Anyone Else Have a Crackling Bum ?

We just did our first coastal leg, we stopped at our destination and in the quiet of the bay we have a crackling sound which we can only locate to everywhere below the waterline.

We have a few barnacles below and we have made a guess there are either being eaten or are eating, does anyone else have any ideas or have gone thru this issue themselves.

Regards
Dame & Jess

Nothing to worry about, probably phosphorous, very common, pittwater, port Stephens etc

This should be in the Confessional really. You have barnacles on your bottom, and are admitting to it in public?

Sounds like a case of Polyester Mites to me. Shipworm has nothing over Polyester Mites...

I've always heard it referred to as "snapping shrimp."

Re: Does anyone else have a crackling bum?

Happened to me last June coming down the ICW when I stopped in Hilton Head. I had a very clean newly painted bottom and heard the crackling all over the hull bottom. The dockmaster told me it was shrimp eating stuff off of the hull. Apparently the shrimp like green ablative ACT bottomkote??

Re: Does anyone else have a crackling bum?

The sound was non-stop when we were berthed in Fernandina Beach earlier this year, but we got used to it. Wife said it was shrimp eating bottom growth.

Re: Does anyone else have a crackling bum?

I think they are a type of clicking shrimp. Have heard them all my life in Sydney harbour but never seen one of them.

New boat owners always wonder what the hell is going on during their first nights at anchor in Store Bay

They are all up and down the coast of NSW. I don't remember them in Queensland or the Reef.

You will grow to love the sound. You know you're on the boat somewhere nice

Re: Does anyone else have a crackling bum?

you know your boat bottom is fairly clean whenye hear them-- they are about a centimeter in length and tannish color.

Re: Does anyone else have a crackling bum?

I remember a story of some poor guy that just about tore his boat apart thinking he had either mice or rats on board after hearing the noise. Eventually, some one clued him in.

Another explanation is sand and pebbles bouncing along the bottom with the current and tides I have heard it and seen it while diving Also heard it lots in the icw and most bays where there is any form of swell. It doesn't take much to move sand
