Re: Defender Ind. Data Breach

To my knowledge Defender does not store cr card information, you need to give the card number each time.
I just checked my cr cards, so far all is well!

So the two hack to stay safe is:

1) Geofence any physical card to your phone for IRL shopping.
2) Use virtual cards for all online shopping.

And get a new (or supplemental) bank, if your current one isn't providing those services.

Both good techniques.

I find that we shop from a number of different devices, so 1) doesn't really fit the bill. Plus there's some effort to set it up.

We've done 2) at sites we're not sure of. Again, it takes a certain amount of effort each time.

We use the Amazon store card only on Amazon, which probably covers 90% of our on-line purchases anyway. We have one card for gas stations only, in each vehicle. As I mentioned, we have a dedicated card for auto-pay bills.

For the rest, we have a regular, daily-use card. If that's ever compromised, we have a couple of others we can switch to while the new card is in the mail. Not really a huge inconvenience, and it makes our lives simpler.

All of this of course come with the "YMMV" caveat. Pick a strategy that works for you. The important thing is to be prepared for any card to be compromised at any time. Especially when you're traveling, and especially when you're traveling overseas.

And not just compromised, you have to also be ready with a backup if your bank flags a real transaction as possible fraud for review when traveling.

Re: Defender Ind. Data Breach

Took about two hours to recover from this. I wrote defender to ask how they would make this right and received no reply. I wrote them to see what they have changed about their system to prevent this from happening again. Until they can detail how they fixed this I won't be spending any more there.
