Wait you have a down pillow? How do you keep it dry?

Well, I have been extremely fortunate, for a number of years. I have kept it mostly on my bunk, and I have been paranoid to keep my bunk dry. It hasn't sogged up moisture from the air. No idea why not. But I am glad of it!

It could have been one of those dumbest things I ever did, but the Fates have been kind, so far, and I am grateful. Thank you, Fates.

Down pillows work fine on my boat. Down comforters too.

Hammock. Mounted under boom. I don't have the guts to use it under sail, but calm motoring or at anchor, it is great.

My Wife took over my down pillow but it’s fine on a boat.
I will not have any water or sand in our bunk.
I remember a few years back a long thread about how do you keep sunscreen etc from ruining your sheets. I didn’t understand that, you shower before going to bed if you wear that stuff, I don’t, wear it that is, we shower daily.
I think thats the key to keeping things clean and dry, never, ever go below with salt water on you, and don’t take anything below that has had salt water on it.

Get salt water on that pillow and it’s going to be nasty until it’s cleaned, I assume you can have a down pillow cleaned?

Agreed, no salt down below. And shower before bed after being hot and sweaty and/or covered in sunscreen. Keeps things much cleaner.

Yes. Best to find somewhere that specializes in them.

I have washed one, once. You use soap, not detergent (so as to leave some oil on the feathers). And air dry it for ages. A tumble dryer is much less fuss than shaking the d--n thing every hour or so, and it takes forever. It would be good to have a desert handy. But the cleaning fluid used at a dry cleaners may or may not be the "right kind" for down, which is why to seek out a place that specializes. Then it is their headache, not yours. But, just folks can do it.

I digress a moment here, but one day, I was wanting a silk blouse, never had one of my own, but had had hand me down silk dresses, so I knew I liked the fabric. And it suddenly occurred to me, that the Chinese have used silk since ancient times--and they sure as heck didn't have dry cleaners! (So, I asked myself, in spite of the label saying dry clean only, what did the Chinese do?) They must have had the maid wash it! if they wanted it clean. Mmmmm. And so, I bought the blouse, hand washed it, and ironed it on a low temperature, and enjoyed it for years.

And, GILow, what's a/the 18-30 rule?????
