Clever uses for everyday boat items

Dinghy pumps can be used also for blowing out clogged lines and for pressurising water or fuel tanks in the event of pump failure. Blow/pump air in the vent line to encourage the tank contents to leave. Just cleared the engine water intake that way, yesterday.

Using the clothes peg to pin my lips together might mean that there was a only half eaten bag of chips on our boat!

But we use them for lots of things... light duty clamps for gluing jobs, bookmarks, holding locker doors slightly open, corralling loose papers on the nav desk, positioning wires for soldering... bloody useful and inexpensive little items!

Need to clean up some stainless steel tube for a solar panel tomorrow so going to try baking soda and white vinegar mixed together to create a reaction. Will report back if it works.

Friend of mine had his genset's thruhull get plugged by jellyfish.
I "invented" the dinghy pump method to clear it. He was impressed.
He had to repeat the process several times a day until he moved to a different anchorage !

We also used a bicycle pump and soccer ball adapter as a grease gun for the prop. It worked a treat.

I'll post this repeat. I know I've presented this idea before some time in the past, but it may be my only original creative application that fits this topic.



I use half of a plastic yo-yo as a line end stop to adjust my topping lift at predetermined lengths.



I pull to yo-yo out to raise my boom to a higher point when the sails on my booms are furled.

I find that in the galley, I am able to fry an egg, as well s boil it.......Another splendid example of dual use afloat......for today's modern mariners.

Ours may also be used to pump that last little bit out of the bilge--always a thing on our Catalina until I fix our anchor locker sitch.

Medium to large size black clips used in offices to hold paper together (successor to paper clips) to hold towels on U hooks on the back of doors. Clip the towel with the jaws and hang the silver handle on the hook.
