MTLandlocked, thanks for the compliment. I've been painting professionally for a lot of years, a lot of practice, a lot of study of old masters in a lot of museums. For now I'm taking a sabbatical from painting. I'm off cruising.

I’m about to go bareboating with my boyfriend for a week and I would love to paint. I’ve never painted on board and I’m and oil painter. Maybe I should try some of those water color tube brushes? How would you set up and easel on a boat? I have a few portable easels, but really don’t know which one to pick . Should I bungy cord it to something on the boat or tape it down? Any suggestions would be great. FYI I have an Edge Easel with the magnetic quick panels. Or I have the Guerrilla box both would take a tripod if I set it up in a regular manner. Or I also have a simple wooden table top easel. Let me know thanks.

Shelli, there are as many possibilities as there are artists. I did not find any practical way to paint while underway. There is simply too much motion in too many directions. At anchor there can be moments of stability interspersed with rocking and rolling. Also not good. (Perhaps that is how cubism got started?) In a slip you can wedge your easel or tie it down. A table top easel can sit nicely on a cockpit table or saloon table.

Of course you can carry your painting gear ashore and paint plein air. If you are using oils you will have to figure out how to store wet canvases onboard. You might find a dry medium more useful such as colored pencils, pastels or high quality markers.

I wish I could tell you that I found a good solution but after carrying and storing onboard my easel, paints, papers, canvases, brushes, solvents, oils, etc. for over a year I concluded to separate my passions and I took them all off the boat. Now I take a camera onboard and paint on shore.

if it were me I would go with acrylics. drying time with oil is an issue and acrylics clean up with soap and water.
