What I was trying to convey is that sex can be the glue that keeps together people who are otherwise only semi-compatible. Without that glue, two people that are merely semi-compatible will have a low probability of successfully cruising a sailboat. That is the situation that the OP is contemplating. I also advocated that he go for it if the cost of failure is not too high. Furthermore, I assert that a man and a woman who are compatible sailing/travel buddies can get along fabulously in a platonic relationship.

As for the anecdote about your uncle and his wife: My condolences to anybody who lives like that.

Move on ole man. Buy a different boat, find a new buddy on the internet and start anew. If not, all kinds of bad business may come your way,; say, she meets Mr. Fullofhimself and the deadbeat will not get off of your boat. Unless you are hoping to refire a long shot love, have faith, move on.

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

It is possible. Just possible

Does it not really depend upon the two people? In this instance you and your friend, and you know a lot more about either or both both than any of us.

As far as costs, a contributor named Sailorboy1 has a nice monthly report going, and it draws many comments, and opinions which you might also find useful.

Maybe more meaningful responses would come your way if we could see a photo of your ex (clothing not required)

I disagree, after 30 years as a professional pilot, roughly 50% of the guys I have flown with are wanker egomaniacs, along with a lot of clients/passengers.
Without exception, every professional female pilot that I have had the privilege to fly with has been a level headed consummate professional. They have more to prove. I have heard negative stories as well, just not my experience. Don't even get me started after many years skydiving...

However, I think this situation is a recipe for disaster. Anyway,

Aaaaaah... that remark truly explains (to me, at least) why she's an ex, and why you can't find anyone else to share what's sure to be a remarkable (but lonely) future for you.

Anyone who would make an insulting remark about Donald, Goofy, Daffy, Micky, Minnie, or any of a thousand heroes out there, will be hard-pressed to find a way to escape the dilemma that faces you. Shame, shame, shame on you!

There are many of us out here who take real offense to your indefensible remarks about Donald. I'll bet one week with Donald on your tub would truly change your mind about him... or at least change the skipper, and give the fish something to nibble on.

Regardless, I truly hope you find a solution to what seems to me to be a hopeless position in which you find yourself.

A man and a woman, platonically?
Nope. Not a chance.

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

Truth time: I'm truly astounded that this thread has run for this long. And while I ain't read all of it, if the question is genuine, then someone needs their Man Card revoked, post haste.
I mean if you even have to ask this question, you know that the outcome won't be pretty.

You want to live with a former lover, in a space smaller than most bedrooms. Where you can hear, see, smell, & feel everything about the other person 24/7. Down to routinely seeing them nude, having the commode but mere feet from your head. And you say that you're okay with her bringer her lovers home?

There are words for that, most all of them emasculating, & none speaking well of character. The kindest of which is that you'll be her door mat.

Odds of this working: Pretty the same as a factory original 1963 Volkswagen Bettle winning the Indy 500.
