I think I found the boat, and she agrees that it checks alot of the right boxes. She has been told by a relative whose friend has a sailboat that yearly costs to maintain a sailboat could equal or exceed 50k which is about what the boat costs (40' 1983 Bayfield). I have told her that yearly averages are equal to or less than half that to even live in a bit of luxury.

My question to you guys/gals is, Can two people who used to be together live on a 40' sailboat as just friends? and work together on cruising videos for youtube/patreon?
Wifey B: I'm going to assume sex was not the cause of you breaking up, that it was probably good. So, have you had sex with each other since you broke up?

How would you feel about her flirting with and going out with this gorgeous hunk you meet while sailing? How would she feel about you bringing a hot chick back to the boat for the night?

What's the ownership of the boat going to be? What happens when things don't work out and you have to separate?

Did you live together before? How did that go?

Is it possible? Yeah. Is it likely? Nope.

If you cannot live together on land what makes you think you could in a boat?

Only if both have been neutered!

Seriously, you know the other person and your relationship, the rest of us do not. When the two of you are in the middle of the ocean and the arguments won't stop, you can't pull out a printout of this thread and show it to your partner to stop the tension.

ShyGuy68:
-Even in the best couple/friends/relation there will be frictions in those close quarters and that's when the "old stuff" comes back to the surface.

-Cost of maintaining a boat is exponential to your lack of mechanical/electrical/fixer-upper/DIY skills and toolbox.

Start with her for a SHORT trip close to shore. You both will find if you can share the costs and get along. Keep extending those trips and when (NOT IF) the split is imminent, you'll have learned enough to handle the boat alone and hope for a new mate to show up down on the water.

Good luck.

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

I can tell you this much for sure:

Yes, absolutely, it is possible for a man and a woman in a platonic relationship to share a cruising experience together. Those who claim that it is impossible are speaking from the myopia of their limited experiences...

The rest is speculation:

...and, probably, puritanical viewpoints.

The fact that you are exes may be an advantage; you should be already aware of each others' strengths, weaknesses, idiosyncrasies, and tolerance/intolerance to them. The fact that you are "...just friends, not even the best of" is a huge red flag slapping you upside the head. Why would you want to try to live on a boat with somebody who is not the best of friends, without sex to form a bond? Since you've already decided that sex did not form a sufficient bond and you are currently less than the best of friends, I guess that your time together will not be satisfying.

However, the adventure might be worth the cost, so I'm thinking that you should go for it. BUT don't invest anything that you are not willing to completely lose (because you probably will), including your mediocre friendship. Same advice to her.

PS - the whole sailing for video Patreons schtick is over-done, over-saturated and not lucrative except for a lucky few. Since you don't care about getting laid, I'm guessing that your ex is too old to pimp out for click-bait. What will you do to attract and retain viewers that hasn't been done a hundred times already?

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

Don't think so!
You already know you can not have any kind of viable relation with this one. Much easier for a man to get along with man than to get along with a woman anyway. Leave the female "can't live with" friend on the dock.

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

Wifey B: Are we talking friends, or friends with benefits?

Don't pretend for one moment that the thought isn't there.

I do know those who could do it. Like a girl who dated a guy before he realized he was gay so they're platonic friends and ex's.

Re: Can 2 people live aboard and just be friends?

Wifey B:

Ok truthfully it was reported as an accident at sea. One night the three of them were in bed together. As was his habit, Ned got up in the middle of the night needing to pee. He didn't use the head, not wanting to wake them. Walked to the stern, positioned himself as always, to pee over the side. He fell overboard apparently and couldn't get back aboard as they sailed on, the boat on autopilot and motorsaiing. The girls woke up and there was no Ned. They remembered him getting up to go pee. The looked, circled back where they'd come from, no signs of poor Ned. It was long suspected that he had assistance falling overboard but the girls had the same story and there was no evidence.
