Bilge Keelers, a thing of the past?

A rather nice 33 foot bilge keeler passed through the Beagle Channel last year having arrived from the Falklands in - I think - May.

A modern example of the type she is currently in the channels somewhere.

That is a RM 1050. Nice boat, and yes, people take these everywhere.

I very much enjoyed these videos, but I can't find an example of why the bilge keel configuration is advantageous. I'd like to believe it is on some remote Greek island. Am I missing something?

There is no advantage once you're there, the point is that the tiny 23' Pageants got there from the UK. Either trough the Biscay (rough!) or the French canals (shallow!).

I think its easy to loose sight that small yachts under 30 ft used to be the norm. Now look at the entries for something like the ARC and the average seems to be 50ft

Thankfully people like Roger Taylor buy 40 year old 24ft bilge keeled yachts and sail to Greenland for fun to show what can be done in a small yacht. Not landing, just sailing there and back.

Yup.. old age is catching up and he's had to go Large..
He used to do all this in a 40yr old 20.6 foot junk rigged Corribee.. most of his filming was done in the Corribee.
