He's a Chessie. Never owned a brown dog before, it's quite an experience!

Re: Best boat pet/mascot?

I put a lot of thought into finding the perfect boat mascot for our family, and I have to say we are quite pleased with our extra salty Chessie. The ideal boat dog in many ways. Sorry for the many posts, it's that one pic per post on an iPad thing.

I should think that he will not get as hot, being that brown is lighter than black.

On the flip side, if you wear brown the hair won't show! With a calico cat, there isn't much you can wear that hair won't show on!

Me too. Coolest dog ever. Cane Corso. Unfortunately mastiffs die young.

Check out the 'Advanced' button/tab it allowed me to attach multiple pictures from my iPad, using the iPad app.

A dog that won't get too hot in the tropics was one of my primary concerns. Of course a Chessie also provides endless entertainment. Serious frisbee dog.

Edit then advanced? I think it's because I'm not using the app.

That is one of the reasons we have cats. My husband's childhood cat lived to be 26 (he was in graduate school at the time). He doesn't (can't bear the thought) understand why people have pets with such a short life span (translation: too painful).

Our calico, Lilly, is 17 and going strong -- except for a day of seasickness at the beginning of voyages.

Yeah, I can certainly see the appeal of a cat onboard. Much easier in many ways. But I couldn't possibly raise my kids without a dog.

I'm a dog person at heart (spent most of my life with Golden Retrievers and Labs) -- how I wish I could teach a cat to play frisbee! We did have a Maine Coon that would retrieve a ball, walk on a lease and ride (unrestrained) in a convertible like a dog -- April was my favorite cat ever. Unfortunately she had some serious health issues and passed at three.

I agree, I raised my kids with dogs too. Now my grandkids are being raised with dogs. But cats are easier on a boat and once you adapt to their agenda, they are quite loving companions -- you just have to remember they own you, not vice versa, LOL!!!

Lol! Maine Coons and Manx aren't really normal cats at all, are they?

I had a friend once who had one with seven claws on each front paw, it was mutated and huge. It used to stalk my Rottweiler/Malamute mix when we'd come to visit. He was terrified of that cat! The cats favorite thing was to wait for him to fall asleep and then pounce on him from up high. He wouldn't go to sleep in that house after a while!
