Bed frame and headboard -- getting rid of 1980s ruched vinyl

My boat was built in the 1980s, so the interior has a ton of ruched vinyl. I hate the look of my headboard and bed frame! I'm working on replacing the ruched vinyl part myself and building a new headboard. I have a sewing machine, and I love DIY projects.

Any suggestions from anyone who's done it before? Any upholstery materials you recommend?

I think the bed frame will be easy b/c it's just replacing the vinyl, which is stapled around the edge of the bed frame.

Looks like it's timber in back of the headboard....why not simply remove the headboard? then re-varnish the timber? If you want fabric, figure out a way, with velcro, to install it tight, and pick a washable fabric. It will get dirty over time, so Sunbrella would work pretty well, it is very washable. Pick some you like, they have a huge selection, and it is easy to work with.
