Baltimore (and North) Area Marina Opinions

We are considering relocating a boat to the northern part of the Chesapeake for a year or two. We love Baltimore to visit, but aren't sure about what marinas would be best for an extended stay. I have found it to quite breezy any time we've been there. That is generally considered "a good thing", except in narrow marina fairways with a 50' boat. I am interested in any comments on any of the marinas in the Patapsco or further up the bay as well. We also like Havre de Grace, but it might be a bit ...ummm... unexciting in the winter.
And of course, we're cheapskates.

Re: Baltimore (and North) Area Marina Opinions

We are finishing our second month at Anchorage Marina in Baltimore. We find this place pleasant, economical, and close to groceries as well as a short bicycle ride to Fells Point. We'll be leaving Sept. 1st as we don't stay in any one place too long, but we will return in the future. Slip rentals here are almost half the rate of the neighboring monthy rates and the elec, rate is 15 cents/KWh as opposed to the 20cents/KWh nearby.

The Anchorage is a good live-aboard marina in Baltimore. Also look at Henderson's Wharf which is right in Fells Point. In Havre De Grace, you will have Tidewater and Havre De Grace Marina. You are right that is is not very metropolitan. But it is very laid back and friendly. Chuck

I looked into staying in Baltimore and thought that Anchorage Marina was the best place although I never made it up there. From what I understand the marina slips are owned privately and can be rented by the owners directly. Go to anchoragemarina.com and click on the 'slips for sale' link. There are about a dozen 50' slips for sale which I think would also be for rent. The sellers contact info is included.
I contacted a couple sellers earlier this year who both were happy to rent their slips for about half the cost of any other marina in town.
Good luck.
Best,
Dan

We do like the Havre De Grace City Marina and the rates look appealing, but we found that their metered electricity rate was very high. The town itself, though small, has the advantage of being able to bicycle to everthing.

If you pick the Anchorage (we spent 3 summers there) make sure to locate on pier "c" or the outer dock attached to "C" . That is where most of the livaboard cruisers stay.

Stay away from any Baltimore Marine Center Marinas......they are overpriced and the employees are minmal.....and fairly unresposive.

Call John G. at Henderson's Wharf.....That is where I am Located.
If cheaper is what you are looking for. Sraff is small but responsive

The Anchorage has a nice staff and a nice gathering room.
It is the only one I know of that has an expansive day room.

I couldn't find a real grocery their. Except the one that had off brand corn flakes and batter in a box. In the winter when all the stores selling used. Stuff close up I would imagine it's pretty vacant. Few good bookstores. If I were to get that removed I'd rather be on the sassafras baltimore east of fells point has a real grocery and lots of stuff to see. Annapolis to provision is a bit of a walk but you can provision without using a car.
