I did not average in kids and used 76 responses to get the average. I also did not factor in when folks started cruising but used their reported age at this point in time. I was impressed at how many over 70 are out there living the dream! This is great news and I cannot wait to get out there and meet some of the many great people cruising the waters of the world.

Most replies were from sail vessels and as you can tell you are all cruising all over the world. I didn't notice any one particular area seeing more traffic than another necessarily. I'm pretty impressed at how helpful and welcoming everyone on here has been since I've started. That isn't always the case on forums and the cruising community obviously brings about a kinder gentler crowd that I am happy to have found. Thank you all for your responses. Not only have I learned a bunch from this but your stories are truly inspiring and uplifting to those who continue to work on land each day in hopes of pulling anchor as soon as they are able! Thank you for doing the calculations. An interesting result, but really only applies to CF cruisers, not the whole world wide cruising fleet. Still, I'm kinda surprised at the result... a bit older than I expected, but then at 78 alla youse guys look young to me!!

Good job!

Jim

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas?

I got Shiva new in '85 when I was 38... took off for the Caribe in 91 (age 44) and lived aboard and cruised full time for 4 years... returned to NYC and resumed work and moved onto dirt... got a wife and we do the boat thing from April through Nov. She's now 62 and I'm 69. Same boat can't spend enough time sailing and messing about on boats. Keeps your mind active.

41, been out for over a year already. Plan on at least two more before returning to work

Currently in Panama by way of Central America, headed for Eastern Caribbean next.

We cruise 365, as we sold everything before we left.

Power - single engine full displacement trawler

I'll second this post. My family commitments or lack there of allow me to cruise the Caribbean and work. I also will be the first to say that I'm the minority by being able to continue doing what I left behind in the states here in the Caribbean.

I'm 57, my wife is 51. We've been in the Caribbean 12 years. No plans to leave. Currently St. Martin / Anguilla. We're on an IT 40 Motorsalier.

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas?

I Just turned 76. I am a semi-retired farmer/rancher. I live off the grid on my ranch 60 miles southeast of San Diego (In Baja) . I keep my boat in San Felipe. My Son, wife and I take trips from there. He is not retired. This really limits the time sailing to 3-5 days every month and a half. I do not have the experience nor do I believe I can take this boat out alone! We have run into some nasty weather 2-3 days out. I am in the process of forming a small group that gets along to sail and explore the Mar de Cortez. The predicament I am in seems common. The good part of this forum conversation is to find out the number of sailors my age and older. I still have from 10-15 years to sail! There is always hope! It is most educational to read about people from different places, experiences, points of view, age and ways they are tackling the problem of getting on the water. Have a nice day.
