Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

My wife and I are 35, living aboard our 37 ft sailboat with our daughters, 3 and 4, and cruising full time on the East Coast for now. We've met a lot of great people twice our age while cruising so far and we get along great, but we would really love to meet more young families. We belong to several Facebook groups of young cruising families and plan to meet up with many of them this winter and spring in Florida and the Bahamas.

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

I am 42, wife 48.
Plan to go in about 1-3 years time.
Like to visit both high/low latitudes like Svalbard and Antarctica as well as places near equator.
As a radio amateur I like to visit many off-places which is not the most common places to vist.
It could be islands in the North Cook Islands, Ducie Island, many islands of Kiribati, St Peter & St Paul Rocks, Rivilla Gigedo and the list goes on.
I am thinking near 50 feet ± a few. Looking mostly at catamarans but also trimarans with few exception monohulls.

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

We are 48/45 and about to retire from cruising. In a year that we cruise we are about 8/12 months out but we only cruise every 3rd winter. We only cruise the Caribbean now and come back 'home' (Canary Islands) for the summers. I think this winter, if it happens, may be our last cruising stunt.

We may yet one day try another rtw, should we find ourselves in possession of a boat that can go into the polar regions. Our present boat can't.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

I'm 52 and am developing my exit strategy from work life. Kids are grown and off to college. Just got a great old blue water cruiser and am hoping to cast off the docklines within the next year or year and a half from San Diego heading south then west!
Fair Winds and following seas to you!

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

I am 45, the admiral 35. Bought our boat, a Beneteau 50 just over two years ago. The boat is on the east coast near charleston sc. We have cruised the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas during three month stints on the boat. We do a three on three off arrangement and it has been working good so far. We escape Colorado during the mud seasons, or shoulder seasons as some folks put it. I am an airline pilot and the admiral is a freelance designer so it is fairly easy to move around so to speak. One more spring in the Bahamas then starting the long trek towards the Panama Canal the the US west coast for a spell.

Hope this helps
Will

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

Age is just a number...stay healthy and you will have no age concerns. I started full time cruising at age 60 and still going at 82. Early on it was 10 years in and around the Caribbean full time....now it is 3 month cruises to the Bahamas after purchasing a home in FL.
Good luck and "do it".

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

1. I am 70 and retired. My wife is 43 and currently working but retired military.

2. We currently cruise the Chesapeake Bay and mid-Atlantic (North Carolina).

3. I average over 200 days per year, and my wife less, but she plans to work only one more year. We will then cruise 3 months, home 3 months, cruise 3 months, etc.

4. Sailboat

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

I am 64, my wife will be 60 in a couple of weeks. We are currently cruising in the Lesser Antilles, and we are on the boat about 120 days/year. We have many friends who cruise into their 70's, and also many who are more 30-ish.

77 next week. Going on 43. It's the seafaring life that keeps you young :-)

Remember that sailing a well found cruising boat doesn't take physical strength. Just experience - and, sometimes, a bit of simple equipment. In fact, if you have to exert yourself significantly, you are prolly doing something wrong :-)!

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

Been sailing for yrs, but hope to cruise in 4-5 yrs upon retirement, when i'll be mid-60's. Working, supporting family, kids to college, 401k, etc have driven all previous yrs. Anticipate Connecticut to Bermuda out/back in 1-2 yrs as further prep for offshore.
someone on earlier post included link to Jeanne Socrates site, 72 yo woman, soloing around the world, non-stop, unassisted. will be her third or 4th go round...so obviously if body is in one piece, chronologic age is not a factor.
good luck to ya.

Re: Average Age of all you cruisers out there living on the seas???

Moved aboard at 25, now 33 and part timing it, the US east coast and the northern caribbean. I see the cruising life as the last true bastion of freedom in the world. You get to see people and places in a way and with a kind of directness or authenticity you really can't experience otherwise. You cant beat it.

But it's also really nice having a full kitchen and be able to garden, brew and ferment things, etc. Nice being comfortable, dry and stationary when you want to be, and having a more stable community of family and friends that aren't always coming and going.
