Any Recommendations for Replacing Mattresses in Owner's Berth ?

So we are about to move aboard our 2001 Lagoon Cat and want to replace the mattresses in the Starboard berth. Has anyone tried this with luck. Currently, the original four-piece sectional is in there and could use an upgrade. We are planning on living aboard for four years so figure it was worth it to put something nice and good for our backs, then I looked at the prices.....yaoza. Does anyone have any experience with redoing marine mattresses in the Florida area (Fort Lauderdale) and what was your experience?

I bought a knock off 5 inch MF mattress from place in Clearwater Fla., don't remember the name, but we found them through an ad in the paper. King size for $300, and we cut it to shape ourselves. Nothing like sinking into a clean dry MF bed after a hard day of fixing things and soaking up the sunshine.

As an interim solution until we could decide on a permanent one, we, like capttman, decided to try a 4" thick memory foam topper from Walmart for a price that is less than the sales tax on a custom mattress. We "customized" it to fit our berth with the use of a box cutter; took only a few minutes. We are so happy with the result that we will probably make this our permanent solution; maybe change it out after a few years if need be. The only problem is that it is more difficult to access the storage area under the berth because (1) the memory foam pad is not hinged in the middle like the mattress, and (2) you have to deal with two large pieces instead of one. In our case, this storage space also contains one of two diesel fuel tanks, so it's not a space we expect to get in/out of regularly.

I purchased an 8" foam mattress from walmart online. 4" high density foam, 2" medium density foam and 2" memory foam. Only available online. Had it shipped to local walmart for pickup so no shipping. I cut it to fit the Vberth. Only about $200 for a full size. Best mattress I've ever slept on in a house or boat. Far better then a mattress topper which I've also tried

We had a custom made latex mattress made by Clearwater Mattress. We tried the memory foam, but I felt that it was too hot in the Florida heat.

That Memory Foam is so expensive and hard to find 'out here'.
I am looking for a topper, about 2 inches.

My advice to Lindsey is to go crazy and get something really good. Beneteau/Lagoon etc make the matteresses for dieting French people.

Can you afford one of those custom inner spring mattereses? That'd be bliss.

+1 We had them made a custom to fit inner spring mattress in 2003 and still sleeping on it :-) Make sure they make it to fold like you can see on the photo's on their website. You can also ask to get the pattern they make for next time :S

We bought a 6-inch latex mattress from http://www.thefoamfactory.com/, and put the 2 inch memory foam/gel topper we already owned on it.

I really do not believe you could do better. I certainly think a custom $2,000 - $3,000 inner spring or latex mattress would be just as comfortable, but I don't believe it would be any better. We paid just under $1,000 total for both matress and topper.

In addition to the comfort, I was convinced by the propaganda that Latex has some really interesting hydrophobic, anti-microbial properties that make it ideal for a boat.

You have a big cat so you may not need to be as much as a tightwad as me, but at Ikea last week I found that my favorite mattress wasn't the $600.00 model, but the $239.00 latex with memory foam topper unit. I plan to buy one of those and trim it down using a very fine toothed hacksaw blade with one end wrapped with tape as a handle and then re-sew the cover. Both of my parents were upholsterers and that's what they did if the foam saw broke. An electric carving knife works well also.
Even if I could afford a $3000.00 custom mattress, I'd still find a way to get it for $1200.00.
Actually, there was a time when I lived in a box on dirt that I was able to afford a $3000.00 mattress but I found a brand new one with a rust stain for $275.00. It cleaned off in seconds. Old habits die hard. That other $2725.00 bought a lot of tacos.

Haha! All great suggestions! We are river people so have spent MANY nights on dirt and rocks, and we are very frugal, so we can fund our dream of sailing. That said, something that we will spend 1/3 of our life on for the next??? years should be well researched. Seriously great ideas, like I said, we are river people and new to the sailing environment, so any "insider's knowledge" is welcomed and appreciated.

I just sqeezed in a regular square matteress. It hangs out a few inches in places, but has the added benefit of giving a lip, that makes me feel less likely to roll out in a rough anchorage.

This was a project I did in June. I had a 4 piece foam v-berth mattress but I wasn't sleeping well enough on it. The pieces would drift apart and I'd sink in between them.

Based on what other people have done, I bought a Serta 8 inch memory foam mattress from overstock.com. I needed a king sized one to fit my v-berth.

I let that sit out for a couple days to expand and then used a $10 electric knife from Walmart to cut it down. It was very easy. The hard part was jamming it into my boat all in 1 piece, but they're pretty compressible. I bought nice sheets from Bed Bath and Beyond and put the mattress' cotton topper and the sheets on it, just sort of stuffed on top. I'll cut and sew those smaller later on when I learn to use a sewing machine better.

It's extremely comfortable.
