Re: Any other veterans living aboard or wanting to?

Hey Brandon G. I’m a retired Air Force vet,and have been living aboard for about 7 years.
If you can, find a military marina that allows live aboards. You can’t find a better group of folks to be around. I like the security, really sleep well. It’s a gated community with 24/7 guards with M- 16s, and 9 Mil. All the amenities are in biking distance.
Go ahead and pull the trigger, it is a great way to live.
I’m on the east coast of Florida, Bahamas, and east coast are in my cruising areas.
Good luck.

I had 6 years on and trained in main propulsion on nuc subs. One year on a DD
22 years as a forester, quit and bought a boat close to 15 years ago.

Re: Any other veterans living aboard or wanting to?

Hello all! Im a female veteran and looking to find a marina in the LA area to live aboard a small boat (havent purchased yet but im in the 28-33 market) and fix it up with a goal of circumnavigating and hiking/skiing on all 7 continents. Lofty goal i know, but life is short and why the heck not right?
Any how, i was wondering if there is anyone here that is a live aboard and a vet thats in the area to give me an inside scoop.
So far Ive emailed a few marinas and have been told there is a 5 year waiting list for status! Look, Im not rich and i dont have a truck so having a boat and not living on it wouldnt be affordable for me. I was thinking of maybe just anchoring out but i see that being a bit of an issue in terms of having to commute to work everyday. Any thoughts?

I'm a Navy vet (nuke subs) and will commence living aboard my sloop in Annapolis this fall. Can't wait!

Living aboard full time will either make or break a marriage.
I am a Nam Vet living aboard my 36’ Marine Trader with my cat.
The solitude and serenity are unmatched

Sorry CaptFigmo, but that really made me laugh - my cat was my wife! She had me wrapped around her lil' paw...and then Got married for real after. The cat finally passed away 6 yrs into marriage (she really hated living aboard) - really hard day - the wife's worked out to be a magnificent life and boat partner...still miss my cat.

My partner and I are both vets. He suffers terribly from PTSD. I do too but not near as much. I grew up cruising, learned to walk on a boat. He was interested but had never sailed. We bought a sailboat and never looked back. He enjoys life much more now than he can "see 'em comin'. He's thrilled to have both found the peace and thrill of sailing. Not to mention a woman that knows what she's doing.

That is one of the coolest posts I've read! God bless ya Fieldmedik - I'm a retired SF guy and have great respect for you medics as I've had a fair amount of training but no field experience like you guys the last 15 yrs!!! - you're the glue - thank you.
Yes, me too, sailing and living aboard is serenity and therapy. I retired in '99 and had been deployed for about 5 yrs straight - don't know how many deployments. I was really burned out. I sailed to France on my 38 Morgan. Sailing made me slow down and live life at 5 kts - best damn thing ever happened to me.
