That's a good point, to keep it in the context of South Africa.

After some discussion, the decision has been made to reopen this thread. Please keep posts to the topic, and not into other areas.

Re: Adult toys onboard

Funny excerpt from my wife's blog from when we were boarded last month in black point. We almost found out how they would have reacted.
,,,, " We were ready to lift the anchor when up pulls the Bahamian equivalent to US Border Patrol, guys with guns (albiet small caliber) they asked to board, didn’t think now was a good time to tell them we were just leaving. So they came aboard one guy about mid 30’s and three young men about 18-21. All very polite and professional.* The older one asked if we had any weapons or ammo, nope we do not. He wanted our paperwork which I had nearby and passports.

One of the younger men barely 18 I think, asked if I could show him around, why of course!* We started in the salon I had to lift all the cushions and show him underneath, pull out various boxes and open them. Next to the galley, open the drawer and cupboards. All clear. Next down on the port side, first the cats/laundry/storage room he didn’t ask for me to lift or open anything there. Next to our head, we have a camping type head in there, he asked me to open the lid, sure will, but that’s weird. Not going to hide anything in there I promise.

Now on to our stateroom,* uh oh. We keep various sized cloth boxes on the shelves to store our clothing in under the wire shelf. In this one area there are three of those boxes, he asked me to pull each on down, there is nothing behind/under them. Next he asked me to move the clothing about so he could see, the first one had all my shirts, all clear. The next one had my panties and socks, all clear. The third box, ummmm I start sweating bullets I pull out sweat pants slowly, then Jammie flannel bottoms again slowly and just as I am about to scar this young boy for life he is satisfied I am not hiding anything. Let me tell you how quickly we headed to the other side of the boat from there. That side was uneventful.

Dulce-
You need to spend some quality time in prisons. With the staff, not as an inmate.(G)
Inmates are famous for hiding things in toilets, usually tied onto a dental floss to prevent them from going away for good. After all, no one wants to plunge in the toilet, so it makes a good hiding spot.
Ditto, I get a big laugh if someone asks about "weapons". Any prison has a display case showing what they've confiscated. Toothbrush? Plastic fork? Chef's knife? #2 pencil or Cross pen? All WEAPONS. Screwdriver? Yup, that's called a "burglary tool" if you're carrying it during a burglary, and a "deadly weapon" if you're caught in an assault. And icepicks, famous as weapons, are oddly hard to find in most kitchen stores these days. Go figure.
Do I have any weapons? Well...here I am, unsedated and un-trussed. Army Rangers would say that sure as hell counts as a deadly weapon.(VBG)
Probably the kids' first day on the job.

Re: Adult toys onboard

Just a quick update two years, roughly 10k miles and three continents later: Been boarded twice, searched once, but so far no one ever opened that unsuspicious sports bag beside the forward berth

So far we haven't found that perfect beautiful empty bay without any other boats and without people on land as well. Want to make absolutely sure not to scare any locals. So it's been mostly in-the-boat-fun till now. Maybe in the south pacific

You don’t have to wait for that perfect anchorage. Not sure how steady your boat is while sailing, but if we’re on our own, not too close to any land or other boats and it’s warm enough, we’ve had ‘fun’ in our cockpit and on our trampolines while underway (though since the first time we put a few large cushions down first as the 22mm diamond pattern of the netting is not so comfortable).

Regarding the toys, we have a small bag for them as well. The top layer is pads and tampons. No official (including airport security) has ever gone past that layer.

But be aware that some countries are very sensitive about obscene materials. Change certain toys from realistic-looking to functional versions and you can pretend they are art.

You know, thinking of those "inflatable" crew members....

....wonder if they would work as a theft deterrent in the same way the police use a dummy in their vehicles ?

Might be good to have one around when you're in places where there is a risk of boat bandits ? Leave it in the cockpit - they would think someone is up ?

It depends where you are. An inflatable sheep would not stop someone from Scotland or New Zealand coming on board.

Please don't read that the wrong way.

Thank you.
