2020 Cruising Poll

I'm not cruising, nor have I ever been a cruiser, I have a desk job and a weekend day sailer that i'm not spending enough time on; so indulge me if you will.

Time Frame - Calendar Year 2020

1. Where was your boat to start the year?
2. Where did the boat end the year?
3. If different, where did you start and end the year?
4. How many days did you spend on passage?
5. How many days did you spend on anchor/mooring ball?
6.How many days at a dock/marina?
7. How many nights did you spend away from the boat?
8. How many days was the boat on the hard?
9. How many days (other than passage) did you spend entirely on the boat?
10. How did COVID impact the numbers vs a 'non COVID' cruising year?
Nothing here to gain, just very curious as to how you all actually do it, I admit to being very curious about the lifestyle but not sure what it really means in terms of time. I'm sure the answers will run the gamut of possibilities as everything is very specific to each vessel and its crew, not trying to learn anything or draw any conclusions just hopeful that some of you respond and I get a little picture into your 2020. Wishing you all a great 2021 filled with adventure and fair seas!

Re: 2020 Cruising Poll

Hi Kebs, we cruise the Long Island (NY / CT) area. COVID restrictions actually increased the number of our sailing days — we spent almost every weekend from April to October onboard, in addition to two cruises of 15 and 20 days, respectively. All locally. I’d say 50-50 between marinas (slip/mooring) and anchor. Happy 2021!

Re: 2020 Cruising Poll

Boating is one of the safest things you can do in a pandemic caused by an aerosolized virus. The aerodynamics of you cause particles in open air and a breeze to basically avoid the passages that might allow you to ingest the virus.

As long as you mask up when you go below with people outside your bubble!

1. Where was your boat to start the year?
Boston

2. Where did the boat end the year?
It's not over

3. If different, where did you start and end the year?

Boston

4. How many days did you spend on passage?

probably 40

5. How many days did you spend on anchor/mooring ball?

many... who counts? 150?
a lot of days I'd get the day sailer and play with that, then go back and brood on the heavy cruiser

6.How many days at a dock/marina?

oh sorry, some of those, not many, are at marinas.... 15? they are expen$$$ive here

7. How many nights did you spend away from the boat?

maybe 3 dozen... I have elder family to check in on, which is why I'm not in Sicily

8. How many days was the boat on the hard?

the cruiser, never...covid made me not want to haul her... the daysailer is gone now. (She's a wet ride)

9. How many days (other than passage) did you spend entirely on the boat?

a lot of those days at anchor I'd while away on the boat

10. How did COVID impact the numbers vs a 'non COVID' cruising year?

I don't want to haul it.... I wore masks at docks and in towns... when people came on board, we'd test and "pact" to be a bubble... or if they were joining me for a day, I'd refuse them quarter below without masks... Not everyone loved that..,

But I never left New England, when the outbreak in summer wasn't that bad....

I'd just like to know where you are that 2020 isn't over yet. I would advise you to move the hell away from there because nothing good can possibly come from remaining there!

Not sure if a boat is safer than other places in terms of contagion / spreading. Just for clarity, I was sailing all the time with my close family only, no other passenger or guest on board. Basically a water-based lockdown.

Re: 2020 Cruising Poll

I see a lot of you have read the message and not many have replied, I'm really looking to 'balance' the info i get by watching the youtube cruisers, which is always the 'best' 20 minutes of their week. I'm wondering what goes on, the rest of the week. Anyway, hopefully more of you with experience will participate and I thank those that provided answers. Any addition to the discussion is appreciated, Happy Travels

Re: 2020 Cruising Poll

Time Frame - Calendar Year 2020

1. Where was your boat to start the year?
Antigua/Barbuda
2. Where did the boat end the year?
USVIs (via the long route around Grenada)
3. If different, where did you start and end the year?
on the boat (full time)
4. How many days did you spend on passage?
Assuming you mean offshore (rather than hopping between bays), far less this year than we had hoped (covid)... probably 15-20
5. How many days did you spend on anchor/mooring ball?
359
6.How many days at a dock/marina?
6
7. How many nights did you spend away from the boat?
0
8. How many days was the boat on the hard?
0 - but now overdue
9. How many days (other than passage) did you spend entirely on the boat?
all of them
10. How did COVID impact the numbers vs a 'non COVID' cruising year?
We expected far more variety and more island hopping, but covid has certainly limited to possibilities in the caribbean.
For now, the days of leisurely hopping from island to island up and down the chain are gone.

Re: 2020 Cruising Poll

Started and ended at home in Rochester, NY. We launched a few weeks late in the spring due to COVID (about a week before Memorial Day). But other than that, I can't say it impacted our season a whole lot.

We did change some of our travel/cruising plans because of it to focus on traveling to places where we didn't mind not bringing friends along and where we could be pretty self-sufficient without a ton of people around. Places we had planned for 2020 will just go on the list for another time.

I think we only spent 14 nights out of our slip (and a few of those were just anchored locally), but including just going out for the day on weekends, we got plenty of use out of the boat. Travel wise, we did one long weekend and one week-long trip, but that's about all we had planned the time for anyway.
