10.5 Month Budget $$
I've been in a marina all month and there are 9 days left in this month's budget period and I still have $652 left in the target monthly budget . That includes that I've paid 1.5 months of slip fees this month and gotten a bunch of boat maintenance stuff. Maybe long term hanging in a marina is acturally less expensive than cruising around to new places. Just what are people going to complain about if I manage to make it under budget while staying in a marina this month?

Re: 10.5 Month Budget $$
I'm thinking 2 cheap throwaway bikes and 8 dinners out at low cost pub will be right on budget.

Marina if done on long term rates and if you shop a little for a good price is actually a cheap way to live.
It's coming in and buying a day at a time that it gets expensive, fast.
How are you handling power there, I assume it's metered? Do you have to get it set up so the bill comes to you, or does the marina do that?
You can get acceptable bikes at Wally World cheap, and gift them to a local goodwill right in time for some kid to get it for Christmas.

Poke the bear, SB. Go ahead, poke the bear.
We found long term slip rental to be way cheaper than rent or a mortgage.

Ah, such a slippery slope. First you're living under budget and then you start thinking hey I bet I could live on $2k a month.
That keeps up till you're anchored in Richardson Bay eating rice and beans.
Just don't go there .

Beans AND rice, I see budget savings potential to be had!

There you go lowering the bar again. I don't think I can go THAT low.
Congrats BTW for meeting the budget!

I'm rooting for you - you can do this!
Don't you just love it when people are waiting for you to fail?
It used to bother me, now I just laugh -
Do it, come in under budget!

Re: 10.5 Month Budget $$
I was shocked reading somebody's "cruising plan" budgeting $5K/month, advising a newbie cruiser what they would need, I was angry even...
The newbie was asking simple things like could they drop anchor anywhere, etc....otherwise they might get an RV....anybody remember this thread ?
I was until recently, a waterfront dweller learning the county and state of MD in's-and-out's of zoning, to rebuild our dock...and the state was very clear, the water is public, right up to our dock and bulkhead, and we had no legal say if someone dropped anchor right in front of our house or dock....and, being a sailer/cruiser, I was fine with that and welcomed the company.
But of course that never happened, because we have all these $5k/month "sailors" preaching "Yuppie" sailing and cruising....and of course all the "blue blood" Annapolis money around here doesn't help either !
My boat "Listen" will be my retirement "ace-in-the-hole" so I don't end up living under a bridge on the interstate somewhere....and I'll be dingy'ing in for supplies, not resort-living at exotic marinas with olympic pools and "free" cook-outs.
I still have a healthy respect for the concept of mere survival that many in the US seem to have no clue of, though much of the rest of the world seems to still respect and remember ...that life is still a struggle.

You try to do a fun thread like in the old days, but the joy gets sucked right out of it

Re: The Joy
OK Boy1, sorry to deflate your under-budget Joy ....if I had never read the "you can't do it for under $5k/month" yuppie advice on this site I could have jovially rolled with your joy...I was expecting you low-budgeters would relate and comment/elaborate on real, down-to-earth budgets and possibilities.....rather than these luxury floaters' ideas of what we can't do.
But then, sounds like there's a huge difference between affordable living aboard on the East coast vs. West, thousands of little gunk holes out here on the East coast.....
