Make sure you make the trek out to Cape Lookout. It is a great anchorage with protection from three sides, and very peaceful. Enjoy!!!

Actually I think the maritime museum is in Beaufort. The Backstreet Pub is kind of fun

You are right - I had it mixed up in my mind. That Library has all the old magazine issues, Wooden Boat, etc. Good reading!!!

I second Cape Lookout very nice side trip. Heading south Wrightsville beach would be a good next stop. 64 miles inlet to inlet on the outside if the weather is good and avoid the bridge delays.

I haven't been there in about 5 years, but the Maritime Museum used to have a van available for cruisers to borrow, free, for a few hours. Worth looking into.

dont know the in's and out's of Beaufort but i can tell you this... a friend of mine was to head up to the Chesapeake this past winter, but he never made it farther then Beaufort because he liked it too much to leave.

The Morehead City Yacht Basin has a loaner vehicle for transients to use. Pretty sure it is at no charge. Cabs here are cheap too.

the maritime musuem library, i could spend weeks in there.
scuttlebutt is a great bookstore, the cru wine bar has events often, the royal james cafe is a cheap place to get food and is a 'non tourist' site.
cape lookout is absolutely beautiful, don't miss that.
carrot island right across taylor creek has wild horses, fun to explore.

lots of nice folks out there also. beaufort is a great place, enjoy!

The town docks have/had a couple of station wagons available to get around. Although, I don't know if there are any restrictions of their use. Just walking around Beaufort, you'll find a bunch to see and do, however, this time of year your options may be limited. Cape Lookout is nice, but with this northerly blast we are stuck in, it won't be much fun unless you catch a single nice (calm) day.

That area is very seasonal, so you may have to be a little creative. It's also a tricky place to navigate as water depths vary wildly. Still, it's a popular place for mariners to stop for a reason. Have fun.
