Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !
By all means, follow the website, purchase the book, donate even if it makes you happy. Never said anyone should do otherwise. Whatever "floats yer boat". I'm not trying to trash them or anything, all I ever said was that they don't seem to be my sort of people, based on reading the book and some of the blog. They could be totally your sort of people though.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !
Sounds a bit like the "discussions" that the kids on gap years have - about being a "real" traveller (usually involving dressing like a twit and once having caught a bus to somewhere not in the Lonely Planet Guide Book ).
Never been a big one on labels (for self or others) - but if required (?) used to define myself as an Alco-Tourist .....in some places I have got more insight than many into aspects of the local culture (?!) - in others have happily stayed as the Tourist. Sometimes even both at the same time ......Pros and cons to each approach for both me and the locals.
The world has moved on over the last 30 odd years - might not always seem like that but Johnny foreigner not quite so clueless nor so grateful for the sharp end of the stick from Mr Westerner as he once was.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !
I like to try to concentrate my efforts into getting the most out of our boat with what we have, rather than wasing energy worrying about what the other guy has and how he paid for it. I sleep better that way. I respect the 'fuzzles for getting out there and doing what they did... not may people actually do.

Minaret...Where in this thread did anyone but you, use the term, hero's?

'Dem Bums are wonderful self promoters, though. I will definitely give them that much!
Come to think of it, maybe that's the difference.

Read back carefully once again. Sneuman first said "heroes", and while I didn't think it quite the right word, I agreed with the sentiment and said so.

...Rather than reading back carefully, I'll take your word for it...you used the not quite right word of Hero

Take what I said before a step further. When your idea of travel is to bitch and moan about not having your burgers, pizza and cold American beer, the local economy will respond. If the one demanding said amenities is the one with the big bucks, paradise suddenly sprouts McDonald's, Pizza Hut and the local beer is pushed aside for Budweiser. In other words, that wonderful cruising destination quickly begins looking like everyplace else.
This isn't hypothetical. It happens all the time.

Nevis has managed to avoid the temptation. Fast food here is getting your lunch served in less than an hour and a half. No American beer, but the Caribs are cold, and the local pizza is terrific.
