I just got back last Friday. I took the train up and had a brutal first night on the
mooring in Santa Barbara because the nuking Santa Ana's in Ventura sent a nasty short period swell up the coast that hit me on the beam because the
wind was coming from a different direction. The next morning I took the
dinghy into the harbor with plans to pay for a guest slip and get gas and by the time I finished the
wind started nuking and I couldn't take that dang tippy wine glass hulled
dinghy back to the
boat because I would have gotten swamped. I had to stay in a motel that night. The next morning was calm so I brought my
boat into the guest slip and spent a few days
cleaning her up and preparing for the trip south. Santa Barbara is definitely my favorite little harbor on mainland Southern
California.
Since I was solo I decided to harbor hop down the coast. First day was from SB to a guest slip in Channel Islands Harbor. Day 2 was to Marina Del Rey. Day 3 I anchored in the free anchorage in
Newport Harbor. Day 4 was to Oceanside Harbor (which has the cheapest guest slip's in Southern California). Last day I decided to forgo Mariners Basin and go to my
mooring in
San Diego Harbor.
I need to talk to the
Navionics people because using their automatic routing feature put me too close in around Point Loma which had me dodging kelp beds and literally hundreds of lobster pot floats. Unfortunately I had to
motor sail about 90% of the time because winds were very light but it all went well. The most wind by far was mid afternoon off of Point Loma and coming into the harbor there.
In spite of the light winds, and excluding the last day which was mostly foggy, I'm thankful that the
weather was so warm and beautiful. It was a good trip. I think I mentioned before that I'm not new to sailing but doing a trip like this solo was/is new to me and I learned a lot from it.
