Sailing Tampa Bay area to RI late April

Greetings Cruisers.
Long time reader, first post.
Late last year my wife and I took our first step towards our dream of sailing to exotic and interesting places and meet other sailors.
We are planning to set sail late April from Tampa bay area to RI. We would like
to stop in the Bahamas, "Bimini & Abaco" and as many interesting ports along the east coast including Annapolis/Baltimore area to see grandkids on our way to RI by end of May. Suggestion and recommendations for places of interest, do's and don'ts are greatly appreciated. Boat is Leopard 39.

I can’t help you but maybe you can help me. I am planning to move to Tampa and sail in a 30 foot plus boat. Currently in Long Island Sound.
Where is the best sailing in your area and best marinas?

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay area to RI late April

Actually I am from RI. I picked up the boat last November in St Thomas and kept the boat here for the winter and I am now planning the trip north. Factory Bay Marina in Marco Island is a great marina with all amenities. Marina Jack's in Sarasota is also a great marina with lots of moorings. Madeira Beach Marina is a good spot and inexpensive. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Looking at navionics maps it appears that so many marinas are surrounded by water too shallow for sailboats. What am I missing?

Apparently a lot! Sailboats are literally everywhere in Florida except the few marinas located in shallow water of past low fixed bridges.

Usually there is a dredged channel into these places.

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay area to RI late April

Are you going through Okeechobee, or around through the keys? Are sailing outside the carolinas, or through the ICW? That will help.

Broad strokes....take the time to sail up through the Chesapeake. If you like history, go to Yorktown. But, if you need to keep moving, Overnight at Solomon's, then St. Michael's. St. Michael's to Annapolis. Annapolis to Rock Hall. Rock Hall to Baltimore, if you wish the big city. Baltimore to Fairlee creek. From Fairlee anchor in the bohemia and wait for a favorable tide to go through C&D canal.

Down the Delaware to Cape May, NJ. If your mast is less than 53 feet, you can go through the Cape May canal into Cape may. Otherwise, you'll have to go around the tip of new jersey. Either way, Cape May is a worthwhile one or two day stop. There are a bunch of marinas there, but also you can anchor out if that is your preference. There is good protection at Anchorage inside the Cape May inlet. From cape may, if want the casino's, go to Absecon (Atlantic City) and stay at the marina. Otherwise, from Cape May head to Montauk point or block Island if you want to go direct, or if you want to go through Manhattan, hug the Jersey coast. Atlantic city is the last usable all weather inlet, for the most part on the Jersey coast. There are some bail outs, Manasquan, but not at night or in bad weather, and it is a haven for commercial boats. Very unsettled water.

Once you leave Atlantic city, you are committed to either going straight to Montauk point, or you can follow up the coast and go into Manhattan under the Verrazano narrows bridge.

I must say it is awe inspiring to pass the Statue of Liberty by sailboat. There are some marinas behind the Statue of Liberty on the New Jersey side and there are some marinas on the Manhattan side. From here, you would go through the East River through Hell's gate and enter into Long Island sound. There aren't that many ports on the Long Island part of the sound. There are many more ports on the Connecticut side. All of this said, it's a really nice trip to go from either Cape May or Atlantic City all the way to either Montauk point or block island. Then, you're home!

Definitely get an Eldridge coastal and tidal pilot. I would not make the trip without that.

Have fun!

What a great trip.

Someday.

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay area to RI late April

I should have mentioned my bias is to go straight from Cape may or Atlantic city to Montauk or block. It is spectacular sailing and it's one overnight and you're there. During the daylight, troll a #1 or 00 spoon, and you'll get some king mackerel and some boston mackerel. Of course, coming from Fla, you might already be loaded with Mahi.

As a side note, I grew up in Tampa area, specifically, Indian Rocks Beach. I went to middle school, high school, in Largo, and USF for college. Still go back and visit and work, frequently. I know all of those waters very well.

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay area to RI late April

Hi Ben, thanks a bunch for the information. My air draft is 63' so I will be going around Key west. I am considering an overnight stop in Dry Tortuga on my way around. Also considering going outside Carolinas, with a possible stop in Charleston SC. Yes, I like the idea of some king mackerel on the way.... Again, thanks. Carlos
