The best way I have found to time the East River going south it to arrive or start out at the Throgs Neck Bridge 1.5 hours before slack before ebb at Hell Gate.

It’s about 6 NM from the TNB to Hell Gate. 1.5 hours will put you at HG right at slack and you can ride the ebb all the way to Sandy Hook and out.

ETA: We often seem to anchor in Little Bay near the TNB and rest up and head out from there.
