Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Looks like we are getting a 1976 Bayfield 32' for the trip. I am now researching the build nature of the Bayfield 32' the fixed rudder to a full keel and sides to the water line seem to be built very strong. The sides to the deck seem to be 3/16". Did Bayfield vary the build quality of the 32's? This boat is found all over the world. Built in Canada for lake sailing. The pounding you can take in Lake Erie matches anything. The highest wave recorded was 40' near Buffalo.
Thank you for a super group of experts.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
We surveyed another Bayfield 32' and I think this is the one we will buy.
I wonder if all the hulls of the Bayfield 32's are the same. The hull from the water line to the bottom of the keel seems extra strong but the hull above the water line seems to be about 3/16" thick.
Thank you for a great group.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Hi There,
Did you end up buying the Bayfield 32 in St. Catherine's, Ontario?
By the way, I've been busy working on my Bayfield 32 Twiga. She's a wonderful boat and cannot wait for spring to get her in the water!
All the best,
Seb.

John Quincy Adams Route to Saint Petersburgh
It is not the prettiest route but in August it is at its best.

His Diary
John Quincy Adams diary 23, 1 January 1795 - 12 May 1801, 5 August 1809 - 30 April 1836, page 218
John Quincy Adams diary 23, 1 January 1795 - 12 May 1801, 5 August 1809 - 30 April 1836, page 218
John had a simple diary entry: one line often mentioning what he was reading.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Looking more likely we will by the 1976 Bayfield and since the hydraulic pump has been rebuilt and the engine goes through a rebuild we can take it across and back. We have four years to sort through the issues. The current stumbling block is getting permission to travel in Russian waters. The owner is a Russian history professor currently working with the Russian government to write history. Maybe this will lubricate the waters. None the less, if we make it to Helsinki it will be a success.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
We got that boat, will be re-powering with a Beta 38 with the 7° down angle transmission if we can fit it in. Mounting a Cape Horn self steering wind vane. Wish I could mount a dingy on the back too. On track to leave Erie in the spring of 2019 getting to Saint Pete in August.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Working on upgrading the 32' Bayfield.
Has anyone crossed several oceans in a 32'?
I am looking for real ocean experiences in a 32'
It may be a small light boat but if I make the interior perfect for sleeping and sitting I think it is doable.
Berthed on Lake Erie we will be crossing Ontario, Erie and Huron to prove her.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Sounds like a wonderful trip. If you haven't picked up Beth Leonard's A voyager's Handbook: The Essential Guide to Blue Water Cruising, you may wish to. It has the list of requirements to retrofit a older 30' boat for passage making. I image 1976 Bayfield would have a lot of retrofit requirements to make the journey more comfortable and safer.
Cheers

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Great suggestion, I just ordered it.
Just completed 6,000 nautical miles on a 42' Westsail. We did the southern loop down Africa to Cape Verde to Caribbean to Bermuda to Long Island.
Back to working on the Bayfield. Thinking of using hammocks. Putting in supporting poles for strength and hand holds.
We got our Cape Horn self steering wind device to install.
We will re-power with the biggest engine we can get in it.
Have new furlers and sails.
First we will cross lengthwise the three closest lakes, Erie, Huron and Ontatrio. Maybe by 2021 we can go.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Replacing the engine this fall with hopefully a Yanmar 3JH40 - KM35A the new electronic version. Will leave Boston for Orkney's then Christanson Norway. The owner suggested we take the canals from Saint Petersburg to Moscow to the Crimea after sailing the lakes. We could go back over the top of Norway but there is no wind till you get to the western side then constant head winds.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Now going for Yanmar 3YM30AE. The hardest part of this journey is rebuilding the boat. Looking for a Yanmar re power forum. Like Beta because the dealer is so friendly, calm and helpful but our yard handles Yanmar. Stay tuned for a real experience.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
We are replacing the old engine. I plan on making an excellent jig complete with paper mache of engine so there will be no questioning if it will fit in the very tight space. Getting one of those human hoist at a thrift store to hold the engine while I make the jig. Looking forward to getting the tolerance to .002 completely around the flange. Selling the old engine, pump and drive plus prop for $250. Pick up in Port Clinton, OH.
Looking forward to proving her seaworthiness by sailing from New York City around the outside to Boston once we get to the sea via the Hudson River.

Ahoy!
That was a long voyage! Very good!
You mentioned putting in hammocks. If you do that, please start a thread that shows your installation, with photos and show how they work with people in them too. I think it would be an interesting topic and unusual here.

Re: Lake Erie to Saint Petersburgh, Russia
Thinking more about using Hammocks instead of lee clothes, I think something like a modified hammock that is a cocoon that is attached to the bulkhead at the head and foot of the bunk a foot above the bunk. It holds you in place without having to hang from the overhead. It would still be a hammock, just one that is pulled tight to keep you in place. I will let everyone know once I get it fitted.
