Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
If you're willing to think outside the box, rent a trailer and park your boat on any secure location, friends or family back yards even. No need to limit yourself to expensive commercial locations that you don't have any personal connection.
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=193354
Internationally regulations will vary, and within the US you may not care about needing no permits, so you aren't limited to my 8'6" maximum beam.
But obviously it's the smaller sizes you're going to feel more comfortable launching and recovering in third-world conditions or even by yourselves.
Give up some comforts, but save tons of money and get a lot more flexibility.

Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
We've had good luck and bad luck. But mostly good. In Greece where we paid someone at the Marina to ensure shore power stayed on and the batteries stayed charged, but...he was fired and the boat started sinking on the hard. Fortunately we returned to the boat before any damage was done.
In Tallin, Estonia the boat, a 41' Morgan is stored inside a heated building for around $5K. This is inside of one of the buildings constructed for the 1980 Summer Olympics. The prices are great here and the service is good and dependable.

Trying not to be too pedantic but Guatemala is not in South America, it's in Central America.

Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
I'm currently paying 880 AUD monthly for a 12m multihull pen at a "cyclone-proof" marina in Cairns while I'm away for six months. Hope its all OK when I get back. Am expecting to do a bit of mold cleaning.

Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
For a first-time foreign-flagged cruiser in Scarborough Marina wanting a berth for 6 months, you'd be offered a 20% discount on the usual rate of $A3,750 for a 13 metre (42 ft 8") boat, bringing your cost down to $A3,000.
And complimentary "Enjoy your boating" ball caps too!

Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
We left our boat in Port Denarau in Fiji for about 4 months - in the water - with no problems. Then on the hard in Pangkor, Malaysia, again, for about 4 months, with a dehumidifier running non-stop. All okay. In Richards Bay, South Africa, we left it on the hard again for another 4 months. We left the boat on the hard in Chagauramas, Trinidad, for about a year with an air conditioner running non-stop and the boat was fine when we returned. Trinidad was the most expensive at about US$800/month and Malaysia was the least expensive at about US$400/month.
Fair winds and calm seas.

The non Australians need a translation--are you talking hardstand or in the water, and what is the difference between a berth and a pen?
I left the boat in Scarborough for 6 months on the hard, and was impressed with the design and constructions of the supports.

When I enquired they responded with:
". Unfortunately we no longer offer dry storage "

Re: Cost of leaving boat in foreign country for 6 months
Ja. Scarborough Marine now only offers dry storage in racks. That is for trailerable boats.
So a "berth" is a wet berth. To floating pontoons. Not hardstanding.
