Comparison Sailing Abacos to BVI

Hello,
I have sailed many times in the BVI with very favorable winds in the months of March to June. I'm considering sailing the Abacos, for a change and would like to know if anyone has sailed both areas around those same months and can give me their perspective. Thanks

Re: Comparison Sailing Abacos to BVI

I have done both and have to admit the wind is more reliable in the BVIs. The Abacos are a great place to visit but you must be aware in June that a storm with wind gusts that can be fierce come up and go away fast without warning. Regardless of what "cruisers net" forecasts it is best to be aware such storms can be dangerous and you must keep a "weather eye".
All the best,
Clif

Thanks Cliff. I think that I might continue Sailing in the BVI, or maybe I'll try the Leeward Islands. Aside from the storms, going the other extreme, any experience with the speed of the wind. I hate to power sail...
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Comparison Sailing Abacos to BVI

Wind speed in the Sea of Abaco is generally 5 to 10 variable but the storm bursts can see gusts up to 60. The Leewards average of 15mph is pretty much the standard making for a much more reliable set and schedule. Of course sailing one way means powering the other unless you have beaucoup time on your hands.

Thanks Cliff. Everything I have read is more or less the same feeling in regards to the wind. I'm definitely sticking to the BVI and possibly the Leewards for achange.
Happy Sailing!!!
