Talking ABC - Islands yachts for sale?

Hi everybody,

My girlfriend and me are planning a 4 month sail trip in the Caribbean starting THIS october. Only one problem, we don't have a yacht We want to start our trip on one of the ABC islands, does anybody know if there is a lot of choice of boats in this area, are there any brokers or other agents/people that I can contact first? I find very little info about this on the web.

We also want to know if it is a really bad idea to sail from the ABC's to Grenada (sailing against wind and current, piracy on Venezuelan coast)? Has anybody done it in this direction recently?

Thanks in advance

ps: we are looking for a 40' cruiser that is ready/capable for this trip

You may want to email John and Brenda, they live on Bonaire and have sailed the area for many years. We met them last year while vacationing there and they seemed to enjoy sharing there knowledge of sailing to us who are very new to boating.

We are in Bonaire at the moment and have spent a lot of time in the ABC's. Curacao Marine has lots of boats on the hard and may have something for sale. Rarely anything for sale in Bonaire or Aruba.

If you want to get to Grenada it is easier to buy a boat at that end of the Caribbean. Lots for sale in Trinidad, Grenada and Martinique. You can then have a lovely sail to the ABC's with wind and current. We think Bonaire is the best place in the Caribbean to spend hurricane season.

Going east can be very hard and there was a murder of a cruiser in Venezuela last month. Easier to sail north east to the Leewards and then make your way down Island to Grenada.

Re: ABC - Islands yachts for sale?

Not too many boats for sale in the ABC. (Compared to other island groups).

Not a good idea to sail from ABC to Grenada. (wind, current, new boat, i.a.)

If you have a well sailing, well tested boat, and if you have skills to match, you can sail to Grenada from the ABC. Otherwise sail to Virgins perhaps.
