79th Street Boat Basin
Looking for some suggestions.
I read somewhere that the 79th Street Boat Basin in New York City was closed until 2025 for repairs. We were hoping to pick up a mooring there on our way through New York in the fall of 2022, for a couple of days.
Are there any other reasonably priced options that are close to NYC that would allow us to explore the city?
Thanks

I like Manhasset Bay. There are lots of moorings, some used to be free for the first 48 hours. You can take the train in to NYC from Port Washington

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
Indeed.
The 79th Street Boat Basin marina is currently closed.
No vessel dockage, moorage, anchorage or launch services are available.
The marina will be dredged and reconstructed to modern codes and standards.
The marina is anticipated to reopen in 2025.

You can take a relatively short bus ride to the subway and a very long subway ride to downtown. Haven't stayed there in years, can't imagine it is cheap but cheaper than places like Liberty Landing (which is a fine marina, just very pricey).

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
Another option is stay just outside NYC. I stayed at Tarrytown marina for a few days and got the train to NYC, very convinient.
I then just rode the tide out on the way to Bermuda. If you want to stop briefly in NYC you can anchor behind the State of Liberty, but its not comfortable.

Another vote for Port Washington. Nice town. Launch service takes you to town dock, 20 minute walk to the Long Island Railroad station, 45 minutes to Penn Station in Manhattan. Launch service also goes to a dock near a supermarket, liquor store, laundry, West Marine, etc.

Uber & Lyft do make it easier for the "last mile" these days
More if you are well off, or time things to avoid peaks

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
Information above on Port Washington/Manhasset bay all good. Update as of last season
on guest moorings, Now only 1 night free then @$25. per night which includes launch/water taxi service to anywhere in the bay. Guest moorings are yellow moorings that line the channel to starboard as entering. Easy entrance to protected bay with good depth and good holding if prefer to anchor. About 2 miles east of East River, Manhasset bay is great to stage for run down river. 2 hours to battery/Statue of Liberty. Can ride outgoing tide all the way down lower NY bay to Sandy Hook.
Port Washington Water taxi # 516 767 1691 / ch 9
Can just p.u. a mooring or call water taxi ahead and they might install a pick up buoy for you.
By far best, closest, economical stop close to city.

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
We picked up a mooring ball at Sheepshead bay yacht club. It was about $35 and an easy walk to the train into the city. Great stopover

Great info from Hugo here. Several years ago my wife and I took out trimaran from below Annapolis to Martha’s Vineyard and he walked us through the East River going and returning with offers of help and advice along the way - especially in his Long Island area. (I’ve kept all your emails and will always appreciate your input!) This June we hope to repeat the trip on our Lagoon 450 cat - a much different style - and will re-read everything he shared.

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
In years gone by I’ve stayed at the Richmond County yacht club on Staten Island and was pleased. I believe that were I to return to Gotham by boat I’d find the $’s to stay at the “One degree brooklyn marina” just below the Brooklyn bridge-what a view!(Of Manhatten)

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
You want the best price? Worlds Fair Marina Flushing NY, $2 foot! We sailed there, docked, did a "tailgate" on the dock and went in to see a ball game across the street. HOWEVER that's it. ...the marina is unfortunately in disrepair. As the dockmaster said you get a slip, electric security gate and water. Long Island RR is nearby. Also is LaGuardia airport, which is convenient, but jet noise all night overhead. Definitely and Ambien night...Not crowded, slips available for transient. I would go back for that price and a ballgame.

You must not have gone down the channel along the park to the very protected and calm anchorage.. next to the boat ramp/dock. several options to get into the city quickly, train, ferry, uber.

Re: 79th Street Boat Basin
So NYC has been running ferry service from multiple locations with in the city. One of the terminals is on the Rockaway peninsula, this peninsula is the 1st barrier beach to greet you as you enter the greater harbor from the Atlantic. On the north side (Brooklyn) there is the gateway marina in dead horse bay. Due South on the queens side of the Gill Hodges bridge is one of those ferry terminals. If you can do days on anchor, I would suggest dropping anchor just east of a small boat YC called “Rockaway Point YC”. This is a great quiet place to stay. The tide runs at 2 knots, there are bars a supermarket and hardware store, and beach side restaurants in the Breezey point (Irish heritage) community.
The high speed NYC ferry’s will get you to Manhattan in a very quick and scenic drive past the Statue of Liberty, Verrazano bridge, and all the finer points on the New York City harbor.
Cheers.
