What to do with my boat when I am not there?

Hello again!

You guys have been very pacient but now I have a new question. I might get a job as an officer on a yacht, 3 months on 3 months off rotation. How would that fit with cruising my 3 months off? And!! what to do with my boat during my months on, to not loose too much money or even earn some with it? Any ideas? (My plan with it is to cruise the caribbean first)

Many thanks!

I would haul the boat in a yard for the 3 months I'm working. I would try to get my 3 months at work to coincide with Hurrican season, if possible.

Yes belizesailor I've read it but it doesn't say anything about giving it other uses other than store it

What else would you want to do with your boat when you’re not around? Someone else, perhaps family or very close friends, using it? Or do you mean chartering it out? Lots of people have their boats in charter programs, but usually you can’t just take the boat out of charter for extended periods of time, especially in sailing season, to suit your 3 months of use. Maybe AirBNB?

Re: What to do with my boat when I am not there?

I bought a 36 foot Bill Lee design once that the owner had moved a couple hundred miles from and rented out to liveaboards to defray his slip fees. Luckily for me they sold a lot of gear including the batteries to defray their rent payments and when a thru hull began leaking it very nearly sank at the slip. It was hauled out at a yard, the yard fees piled up and I was able to purchase it for a total of $8,000 put almost $3,000 into it and a lot of elbow grease and sail it for 3 years and sell it for $29,000. The best deal on a boat ever for me. Be careful

I think you would be financially better off to maximize your earnings during that time.

Boats cost money...they don't make money.

Best solution is to keep the costs down while you are gone (without putting the boat at undue risk). If you can find a place that will haul and store on land inexpensively, that minimizes the risk of damage while you are gone but likely will cost more than out on a mooring where risk of damage (ie: someone hits your boat, steals from it, it sinks or breaks free) is higher.
