Re: What is the more useless thing that all boaters have?

I reckon a holding tank would top the list!

Wheel barrows are handy for gathering the crew...
But Boatie, that is using the wheelbarrow OFF of the boat! I can usually get the crew sorted if they are still on board...

Cheers,

Jim

You know, Boden, I have to agree--but that's not PC! ;-)

No matter how you do it, keeping the water on the outside is a good deal.

Also, some gear for catching pelagic fish may lead to the best tasting fish
you ever ate! So yes, you should give it a try anyway. Really fresh fish tastes way better to me than store bought, even though it has been flash frozen.

But the thing I used to find most annoyingly useless was large permanent-inflated fenders. Since we anchor out almost all the time, they were huge wastes of space most of the time. Solved this problem by going to inflatable fenders. Now carry twice as many fenders in less than 1/4 the space. Love it .
Which fenders & sizes & how much do you weigh? We are 58 ft; 36 tons. Our fenders are monsters. Do you feel comfortable leaving the boat pounding on them for an extended time? Maybe a new thread; inflatable bumpers?

I too keep my bell - same reasons.

- A bell is only really useful to avoid the authorities harrassing you. Otherwise it's outdated. (flags are similar in nature)
- Barameters, sextants and other old time devices are nice curiosities and you could come up with senarios where they would be useful but for typical cruising there are better options.
- Finally, what type of cruising you do is important. If you are an off the grid, no power anchor out all the time solo sailor, your list of worthless items will be dramatically different than a couple who like amenties and spends time in marinas.
Thank you. So, we can say that regulation is obsolete when an old useless product is mandatory? i.e. Flag, bell... And old time devices, are useful in extreme scenarios.
