Re: Welders

Tig, Mig, Stick, stainless, aluminium? It would help if you were more specific.

Re: Welders

There are often little jobs in any month, usually on ally, stainless and some castings.
More often it's general fitting work that comes up. Some-one who can strip a bearing, instruct a machine shop, and re-install will have a couple of jobs a month. Where there is real demand then there is already a local firm doing it, they won't be pleased to see you in 'their' yard. It's not a living, you might make some friends.

Re: Welders

I'll give you a job right now. I need two SS mixing exhaust elbows made up for a Yanmar 2GM20F by this weekend. Interested?

Re: Welders

If you're generally "handy", not just welding, and can do boat repairs (heads, plumbing, electrical, minor diesel work, propulsion, rigging, etc.) there's usually opportunity to make a few $$ in the liveaboard community. You'll have to make yourself known...cards or postings on marina bulletin boards and word of mouth. You certainly won't become wealthy but if you get the word out that you're available, reasonable and stand by it, you'll get work.

Re: Welders

Yes. There is always some amt of welding on boats. You will have to have your gear with you. Then you will have to advertise smartly in local sailing communities. Where regulations are slack (or in your own country) you will be allowed to take orders from landlubbers too.

Re: Welders

If you're a liveaboard any TIG will do. If you're cruising a scratch and start Hi-freq unit that is 110 ACV run off an inverter or generator will do. Always repairs in an anchorage if cruising becomes your goal.

Re Mixers I recently had to remake my mixers also, little issues is the salt water leaked all over the starter motors and wiring harness connectors and as I did not notice for a little while they were leaking as very hard to see. shortly later one starter motor stopped working but was easy fixed with a removal cleanup and rebuild and anti rust stuff applied all over, did both for the exercise. I am lucky I can do this work with no issue would have been a little more difficult if you were not handy etc. hope you don't suffer same fate>
