Re: Website for your boat?

Wordpress offers personal domains as an add on, so you have to pay and their payed hosting is quality but steep. BlogSpot will allow you to use personal domains and (while I have no experince with it) Weebley's seems to be free as well (Weebly Website Builder – Build a Free Professional Website)

The Amazon thing is dependent on what you want. Linking to products is as easy as making the link like I did above. If you want to join the Amazon Affiliate program then you have to deal with Amazon and get custom links.

I'm curious as to what you think expensive is. I used to host at GoDaddy and my site(s) were $6/month. I moved away for speed reasons not cost.

Re: Website for your boat?

It was several years ago but I also had an e-commerce site. What really threw me off Go Daddy was that I found it hard to use. I also didn't like their support. I was new to websites & had a lot of questions. I remember I didn't think they were responsive. Cost-wise it was steep but I had all the bells & whistles.

What really got me mad was that it was hard to cancel. If I remember, they locked me in for a year without my authorization. That was the deal-breaker for me.

Re: Website for your boat?

Edit- I kept canceling the auto-renew but it never went through & I got stuck paying for an additional year I never wanted.

Re: Website for your boat?

You can get a domain name from Yahoo Small Business. I had one for an HOA website (on a free server). It starts out cheap but after a while it's about $45 per year. You can link it to any server.

Re: Website for your boat?

Thanks RW.

I need to just spend a day looking at the sites & see what's the best fit.

There are a lot of good suggestions here. :-)

Do both Wordpress and Blogger allow a position map
and "where are we now" feature? And if so, how do you update it?

Does Weebly & Wordpress offer domain names, plus links? Guess I better check on that...
One of the other good reasons to secure your own domain name is that you can take it with you. Some blog sites may offer domain names that are really registered to the blogsite, and not to you. So, if you want to change blogsites, you'll need to come up with a different domain name. It's nice to be able to always keep the same name so your old acquaintances know how to find your nice RTW blog!

Re: Website for your boat?

Over the years I've used several -- blogspot when I started sending text updates twice a month for friends and family to follow ... Sail Winterlude Original Blog

I upgraded to Weebly which allowed me to use my Sail With Winterlude - Photos url but was free and easy to create - this is the one I liked best, although it was limited in what it could do. Sail With Winterlude - Photos It hasn't been updated for a bit, but is still my favorite.

Then I "upgraded" to wordpress/ genesis prose child theme. I've been through hosting with Go Daddy and now HostGator (another site I have uses BlueHost) -- none are great, all are slow. But the biggest problem I have with Wordpress is I want to just enjoy the website, not learn code or CSS or to be a "techie". Not sure I'd do it again. If you have any background in coding, you might find it easy. That's not me. I have to pay a freelancer to do anything except write posts and include photos. Frustrating.
