Transaction Costs and Sales Taxes

I was told by a broker that if I buy a boat in Rhode Island and keep it there, I will not have to pay sales tax. If I decide to take it to Maine, or bring it to Bayfield, WI (on Lake Superior), will I have to pay sales tax to register it? How does this all work?

Re: Transaction Costs and Sales Taxes

Rhode Island has no boat tax.

Connecticut right next door does.
Boats docked in Connecticut for 60 days or less will be exempt from the sales and use tax, and 6.35 percent, the rate of the state's sales tax, on boats costing more than $100,000 will be taxed after 60 days.

Just to add to what Cotemar said. I'm also a CT Resident. Like anything else know the waters your storing your boat in. Ct happens to tax boats, jet skis, vehicles. Same if I bought a car in RI. Once I return to my state to buy a plate I have to pay Ct sales tax. I know from dealings with a snowmobile that Vt, NH, and Maine don't charge sales tax. However, this advise doesn't help for boats as they make treat these differently.
