Yeah, 'cause who wouldn't want to go for a dive off the "Benz".

Re: Tradition around boat names

Our little 7 metre boat was named Atanos, had no idea what it meant, maybe some reference to Jack Aubrey once saying “ all atanto” on his ship. Not really wanting to change the name, lived with it.
Tied up along side another boat one evening and had the inevitable question, what does the name mean?
Next morning the lady next door (who turned out to be cryptic crossword lover) advised me she had worked it out, it was Sonata spelt backwards

Re: Tradition around boat names

I’ve said it before, but you could call your boat “Love Me” and your dinghy “Love Me Tender”.

Make it something that means something to you but, as stated simpler is better... I knew someone who named their boat 'Breakfast in Bed'...
A real bugga when the station your calling in emergency asks you to spell it phonetically..
Tara is also the taoist goddess of fertility

Get a good bottle of champagne (not a cheap one). The senior female involved with the boat must stand on the bow, pop the champagne and say, "I hereby rename this boat whatever."
She then pours some into the water as a tribute to King Neptune, pours some on the anchor as an offering to the gods of occupational health and safety and then she and the rest of the people involved drink the remaining champagne.

My wife would rename our boat every other week if I let her.
If you've used this highly abbreviated ceremony as-is, remind me to never sail with you...

You skipped one hell of a lot of important steps! There's a ton of stuff to be done before you even get to the renaming ceremony.

Here's how to do it properly.

Re: Tradition around boat names

A lot of good advice here. No stupid names. No stupid puns. The PO of my sailing vessel named the boat Mary Jane. Not offensive, but I didn't want to call that name out on the radio, or invite the CG on looking for weed. haha. I so changed it to Southpaw as a nod to my fav land based sport and obsession.

Re: Tradition around boat names

I bought a sailboat with the name Archimedes.
I decided to honor the decision of the former owner and facilitate communications with the Coast Guard .... Now it is called TRACK, something like a new course in my life, but short and precise

Stay away from women's names. I always appreciate funny boats names with a good pun

How about this? It is registered with Lloyds and officially known by the name, not a number.

Re: Tradition around boat names

The fish tugs on the Great Lakes are often named for a family member and it's not female-specific. First name and an initial or first and middle or family name is common. The names usually change if the boat change owners. Occasionally they have a word or concept name.

Oh Yeah, so cute, and so funny, and so clever, and so original (not).

Uh, what is that I smell?
