Recommendations about boat registration

Hi there. I would like to ask the sailing community about advice on a registration for my friend, who has Swiss nationality. He is tired about Swiss requirements and want to register somewhere else.
In Germany it's not possible as he does not live there.
In Jersey or Guernsey it's not possible because he has no EU citizenship.
In Malaysia it is possible, but a lot of money has to be paid in advance.

Any advice for us? Boat is a catamaran Fountain Pajot year 2009.

Thank you
Alex

There is something called "Light Registration" in holland that is open for non EU citizens.

I think though its only valid for sailling in EU waters, although I'm not totaly sure about that.

Maybe worth checking out.

Just Google "Light Registration Holland" and you should find what you are looking for.

I did mine a couple of months ago.
I can highly recommend that you contact "Zeeenwater" for that (just google it and you´ll find it). Much cheaper than the "all over the shop" advertised companies.

He can register in Jersey on the British Small ships registry , without paying VAT - through a local representative - like Blue Water Services - I as a South African have registered my yacht on this basis nearly 10 years ago and pay an annual fee of about GBP 20.00 p.a. I hope you manage to sort it out Rgds Garth

The SSR is only applicable to Jersey residents.

Look in to the Marshall Islands for registration.

Hi! Alex,

In Malaysia, how much your friend has to be paid in advance?

You need an Agent and usually for an individual full registration (Certificate of registry, Carving & Marking Note, Call-sign and Ship Station Radio License or MMSI NO) is less than USD2K. Time taken is about five to 10 working days if all documents on hand. Online registration.

No need to incorporate an IBC, no Director or Secretarial fee annually, no import tax, no GST or VAT at all. Annual tonnage tax is less than USD90. What else your friend wants?.

You may contact/surf www.facebook.com/LangkawiRegistry for further information and quotation.

Regards.

Helise.

Malta. It's EU, the flag is well respected, no residency requirements and if you have to pay VAT, Maltese VAT is less than most EU states.

Re: Recommendations about boat registration

Passport holders of any of the EFTA countries can apply for a Dutch flag certificate (ICP).

Furthermore non-European passport holders if and when they have a valid permanent EU residence permit.

Maybe the Belgium flag could also be an option, although I am not sure what their policy is with regegard to EFTA passport holder.

Re: Recommendations about boat registration

For the Dutch flag, would one need to pay VAT on a non-european boat?

If you want to apply for the ICP, the informal flag certificate, then you do not need to submit any proof that the VAT has been paid.
