Paperwork for boat purchase in Bahamas

I recently purchased a 45 foot ketch from some good people who live in the Bahamas. They are American. The boat has been in the Bahamas for some time now. My question is, will a simple bill of sale and registration in the Bahamas be sufficient to show ownership?
The boat is a 1979 model. Should I get a title of ownership or will the registration in my name be sufficient? I know it is different in the states vs the Bahamas. And will the coast guard in the states be fine with a Bahamian registration card? It is registered in the Bahamas.
What if I want to sell it at a later date? Will it be a problem without a "Title"?
Thanks for your input!!!!

Re: Paperwork for boat purchase in Bahamas

I have purchased 2 center console boats that were Bahamian registered from American owners over the last 5 years. The registration seems to be the equivalent of the title in the Bahamas. You will be required to have a notarized bill of sale to register the boat in your name.

Thanks. I've got the notarized BOS and registration done. Really just wondering if title is required for resale or proof of ownership in the states.

Depends I think on where you try to sell it.
Florida I believe doesn't have titles for boats, so people don't expect to see one, maybe if you sell in a state that does, they might?
Then check on the sales tax thing, I don't pretend to know the ins and outs, but that may be a bigger concern that a title?

Yes florida has titles for.boats. no.title no registration. No.registration equals ticket and or seizure . no ability to resell

Has the boat ever been USCG documented? Has it ever been to the states? Duty paid?

If you are a US citizen it would seem beneficial to have it USCG documented. It will be much easier to resell to someone in the US later.
