Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

We've start cruising in 2012. Since 2016 we make money during 6 months a year. We making daytrips with tourist on Mallorca. We are fully licensed and insured to do this, included a license from the balearics. A very fun way to make money.

I'd say do the research and make your best decision... but probably also best to call it what it is - a gamble rather than an investment.

Bottom line, if you're okay losing the money (for the chance to make more), than why not??

Probably been posted somewhere in this thread already.

- Marine AC repair
- TIG welder (be aware - welding stainless has some seriously nasty potential health impacts).

I do automotive A/C work on 134a systems and retro fitting some older R12 to 134a. How much different is marine A/C and what tools are different?

Not a lot but read the posts on stepping on the locals toes by taking their business away.

100% get that. Been there. When traveling there may not be any locals with the equipment or knowledge. I know how some yachties love their A/C.

Ben. There are plenty of used marine air conditioners for sale. Why not pick one up on the cheap and check it out.?

I'm currently not in an area with boats.

Wow, 103 pages of comments. I can't remember if I already responded.

-Sail repair and canvas work (get a good sewing machine and a bit of supplies, you can stay busy if you hustle a bit.

Not what you asked for, but stopping in foreign countries and working professionally there (with work permit) is FAR more lucrative than any jobs you can do on board your boat. Orders of magnitude more lucrative. If you have the skills they need they will get you a work permit.

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

Here is another one I have been doing:

-I act as a sailmaker and I work with a few Asian sail making factories, Fellow cruisers pay me a fee (a small fee) and I help them order sails. I do the consulting on what they need or want, help them with the measurements of their boat, and make the order with the sail factories with my wholesale account. They usually take delivery of the sails in their home country and pay me in my home country through funds transfer. No goods or money changes hands in the foreign lands so little risk of violating local work permit rules. I do take a risk of the sail does not fitting or if it is defective but so far I have not been burned.

You have locals who work in the Marina without being dragged in? Lucky.

Our marina has ~150 masts and another 250 boats of various description, can't even get someone to come work on an outboard without a ridiculous trip charge, and the riggers around here seem to cover ~100 miles of coastline to get their business.

About the only non-DIY service we have are bottom cleaners.

This is a real concern.

When we crossed the Pacific in 1998 I did sail repair and canvass work for cruisers. Lots of it. I charged $15 an hour, which worked out to $100 per day if I worked a whole day. That was USD. Not bad for a retired guy, I thought.

When we got to New Zealand there were several sailmakers there who were charging, at that time, $15 an hour (NZD), and trying to feed their families on it. I just didn't feel like going after the cruiser's business in competition with the locals. That is when I walked into the immigration office and sought a work permit so I could don a suit and get back into the corporate world. I was still competing with the locals, but at least I was legal.

To those of you living in a marina where the tradesmen are unreliable, expensive, or impossible to get, and you are a citizen in that country yourself, it seems like an opportunity. In that case you ARE a local, and I'd think all you have to do to be successful is show up on time and charge a fair rate for an honest day's work. Where I am at now there are cruisers on the radio nets every day crying for the names of refer repairmen, upholstery makers, outboard mechanics, etc. I've got a permanent residence permit and I can legally work here. I think I could find have heaps of customers if I had any of those skills and wanted to work.
