This would rule out cruising, since it would only work for specific areas. To run a water taxi, you will need to buy a boat, license it locally and have a Captains License. Not conducive to moving from place to place. Chuck

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

Sailcat,

Quick answer, sign up for free account, start your book and look at the instructions they give.

More specific:

1. How does page count work as far as cost?
Cost per page. They have a cost estimator that calculates and gives you price per copy. My experience is that they are to the penny.

2. How does color work?
Higher cost per BOOK if color. If you choose color does not matter if one color photo or whole book. For what I do, color is incredible deal. You have to do all the resolution, size and color correction yourself, so there is a learning curve, but once you get it you got it.

3. What sort of camera equipment are you required to use in relation to formatting?
No requirement as to equipment. There is requirement for resolution at 300 dpi, which is pretty much standared for any print industry. I use mid grade digital camera, but have also published photos of photos re-scaled using Gimp to 300 dpi. Very high end would say inadequate, but 98% of ordinary people (my estimate) could not tell the difference.

Happy New Year,
steve

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

In my experience of talking to many people over the years, Any business that you run from your boat, needs to be something that is clearly not stepping on a locals business or taking customers from some local activity. Then the likelihood, once you stay below the radar is you will be left alone. Things like fixing marine refrigerators , is a good one as few ports have anybody that does that.

A far better idea if you want money , is to look for employment with a local firm or business, you'll be paid " under the counter" , etc and its good for a few months, jobs like "bar-tending", waitressing, etc etc.

I don't dispute what you say, but in this case I think it is best to be blunt about what we are discussing. What you are suggesting is that people violate the law. Being paid "under the counter" means that you are working illegally. While that may be an effective way to earn some money, and the odds of getting caught are pretty small, I still think that anyone contemplating this needs to consider the possible consequences if they DO get caught.

Those consequences, of course, will vary from country to country. On one end they may be nothing more than a modest fine, or a request to leave the country. On the other hand, some countries take this very seriously; they may confiscate your boat and put you in jail. So, it would be wise to consider the risks versus the rewards before you choose to commit a crime.

Oh wow! You must have a "system". Will you teach me? I'll cut you in for 10%. Oh, I'll need a stake to get started.

That is great. I can't wait to get online and try it.

Since you were so generous with your poker tips I'll share my stock market strategy with you. It's guaranteed to make you rich............. Buy low and sell high. Works every time.

By the way, I checked my Paypal account and I still haven't received the $10,000 stake to start my poker career. I'm sure it's just an oversight and will be showing up any minute.

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

Just thinking of the services I saw other cruisers needing and paying for:

1. Bottom cleaning (so have a hookah)
2. Oil Changes (have a nice 12v DC pump and 5Gal bucket)
3. Bright work, waxing, general cleaning
4. Basic sewing with a Sailrite machine and supplies.
5. Computer service/repair

The problem is you will be competing against the locals, which although done every day, is illegal without the proper work permits.

I still say the way to make money while cruising which keeps you perfectly legal is to figure out a way to do SOMTHING on the computer online.

"5. Computer service/repair"

This is an interesting one. I'm very handy when it comes to IT. Do people find they need help with computer issues a lot?

Not sure about making money from it though, I always thought of it as a... 'I'll fix your wifi, can you take a quick look at my Engine?' Type of trade.

The best way to make a fortune while cruising is the same as most other desirable pursuits like motor sport, backpacking and space tourism.

Start with a bigger fortune and you're 100% guaranteed to make a smaller fortune.

It's a constant on the VHF Cruisers Nets, folks looking for help with their computers. You ain't going to get rich...but that's not the point.
