Re: Make-Money-While-Cruising List
I am sure you could buy diesel legally in the country, paying the necessary taxes included in your price, but getting some type of discount for buying more than 5000 liters and then offering the diesel to yachts in remoter anchorages and charge a premium for the delivery service.
Also what I would concider is a hydrolic pipe benders and some stainless tube and make push/pull pits and beemies, radar mounts to order.

Sure you can buy it legally. Reselling it, not so much. Heck, it's not even legal for an American citizen to resell gasoline in most states here in the U.S. without all the proper licenses and permits. You really think they'd let some foreigner do it?
Sell in enough volume to make any real money at it and you are very likely to attract the attention of locals who want to be in that business. Once they turn you in, you get the joy of learning about another country's legal, criminal, and prison system. Won't that be fun!
Sorry, but the bottom line is that most countries around the world do what they can to protect job and business opportunities for their locals. Not an unreasonable thing for them to do, if you ask me. What it means, though, is that most of the easy and obvious ways to make money are going to be illegal for visitors.
If you want to break the law, and risk prison time in a third-world country, that's your choice. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to others, though. The other option is to study the laws of each country you visit, to see what is allowed and what is not. You'll probably be disappointed with how much is not allowed, but you may find something that you can legally do to make a bit of money.

It is not my intent to criticize your idea, but just to clarify the problems involved when doing it in a foreign country. So long as you do not try to circumvent the local laws and taxes it could be a viable operation. In Bequia there is such an operation.
- - There is no problem buying fuel within a country and certainly a large purchase will normally enable a discount. But, the "act" of reselling the fuel is where the retail "tax" problem is incurred.
- - You cannot prepay the tax as you will not know how much or when or if you will be able to resell the fuel. You are the "end of the line" or the retailer of the fuel and thusly have to collect and pay the retail taxes on the sale of the fuel.
- - And in most small countries, the retail price of fuels is fixed by the government. Any attempt to resell the fuel at a higher price then legally allowed within their territory would be a serious crime over and addition to the tax problems.
- - There have been several instances in the Caribbean where people have purchased fuel in Trinidad at $0.95/gallon and then resold it in the Windward and other islands where the going price was nearer to $3.50 per gallon. They were caught and are in prison.
- - There are plenty of legal ways to earn money while cruising outside your home country and they normally involve following the rules and regulations of the country by getting work permits, etc., and then starting boat repair, servicing, and parts supplier operations that employ locals. Governments love and welcome anything you do that will result in some of their citizens getting jobs and increasing the tax flow into the government.

Your point is well taken, but as soon as one is in international waters, then there is no problem.
Hopefully those international waters are calm, otherwise things could get "interesting".
Of course, specialty equipment would help too:

Re: Make-Money-While-Cruising List
I have just read all eleven pages of this thread and decided to throw my idea into the mix. No one that I have talked to thinks that it will work but I keep coming back to it and no it is not legal. Smuggling, Pets. Some people spend a lot of money and time to get their precious little furry friend into a place like Hawaii. You could be a true outlaw without all the risk associated with drug and gun running. If that doesn't work maybe you could try pet kidnapping for ransom or yappy dog extermination. The problem with this thread is that anybody that is out there making a living while cruising doesn't want to increase their competition by giving away their idea. I am looking for a way to make money that doesn't involve selling anything. I am the worlds worst salesman. I have never been able to sell anything for more than I have into it. I have plenty of skills but to make money at them I have to sell myself. Oh well, I guess I will just stay broke.
