Long Time Lurker With Questions

Hi All,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Before I ask my question I'll give a little background on me. I bought a small sailboat (a 1972 Cal 24) last year and have been fixing it up. It was in surprisingly good condition for what I paid for it so I've only had to do fairly minor work like sanding, staining, painting, etc etc. I'm a complete newb when it comes to sailing. I've always wanted to, but the closest lake for sailing is an hour away. So, this opportunity arose and I immediately jumped on it and, not to my surprise, I fell in love with sailing. I eventually want to move to the coast (not sure which one) and liveaboard. I realize there is a lot to learn so I'm not in a huge rush, but I'm 29 and this is about as patient as I get. I'd like to start preparing for it now and set myself up for success. I have a wide variety of skills, although nothing that makes me a ton of money, at least where I currently live.

So, here's my question...Are there opportunities to support myself while I liveaboard with these skills?

-Photography
-Videography
-Administration (I currently work in a pension consulting firm as an administrative assistant)
-Bartending (Everything from craft cocktails to craft beer)
-Baking

Any tips and/or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Skye

In the upper bar you will see a search button, click on it for a drop down and go looking for working while cruising.

There have been many threads on this topic and they should keep you busy for hours. I believe every topic area you listed has been covered.

Interesting. I've done that and have not been able to find any actual information on these subjects.

Thanks, Boatie, for the link!

Hello Skye, welcome aboard CF.

Friends of ours cruised 8 yrs, working along the way, he worked as a bartender, she as a nurse.

Here's the clue to the search: After you click on Search at the top of the thread, a menu drops down. The second major item is called a Google Custom Search. That is the one in which to enter the concept. The first one is like a word matching search, and does not work well with ideas.

Re: Long Time Lurker With Questions

I've looked through that one. Thanks for posting the link, though. I guess I was more interested in how people are currently making a living with any of those skills, not just ideas to pursue. There's a lot of suggestions but I have yet to find anyone on this forum who makes a steady income actually doing photography/video, or any of the other things I listed. Guess I shoulda been a coder

Go on YouTube and look up La Vagabonde on there..
They got a million dollar Fontaine Pajot with their videos..
Guy I know back in the UK follows the serious racing circuit and takes action shots from his RIB.. then freelances them out.. if your any good you'll earn.

Oh I know all about them! Im actually exploring the idea of having a sailing channel as I have the necessary equipment and skills, but I’m not sure anyone wants to watch a newb trying to sail around a murky lake haha

And it was an outremer

I used to photograph downhill ski competitions so that might work out. I hadn’t thought of that, I’ll look into it. Thanks!

Hey, I'd take a million dollar boat with or without stabilizers. I'm not picky

Re: Long Time Lurker With Questions

Seems a few years ago starting a YouTube channel was feasible, now it is over-saturated. It would be tough. Boaty's idea might be a good one!

Definitely. That would be great but not a feasible income unless I got real lucky. I currently have a broad portfolio so I may be able to snag some freelance jobs. I’m going to check out the circuit races and hopefully they’ll like my style and I can build relationships and have something reliable. I don’t love shooting weddings anymore but if I’m sailing around and can get even one in whatever location I’m in, that would cover my expenses for a few months. But it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. And I don’t know anyone haha
